DP and I love this name but reactions have tended to come down on the "it's a herb" side. I just think it's a name that'll age well - cute baby, cool teenager, charming gent and sweet old man. Please tell me there's someone else out there who appreciates Basil and not in a culinary way...?

Exactly Squoosh. I saw a program about Fawlty Towers the other day and it's shown in almost every county of the world.

McKayz · 15/05/2012 12:16

Country not county sorry

mopsyflopsy · 15/05/2012 13:29

Well, my 7 and 9 year olds have never watched it.... but then we don't watch a lot of tv.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 15/05/2012 13:52

Sorry but all I hear is " who put basil in the ratatouille " :o fwiw a family member used to work with two basils. One was apparently an a*h**e but the other was very nice. Think it's fine for a baby and find fir an old man but in between I don't think it fits :)

nizlopi · 15/05/2012 14:05

I love it, my husband doesn't though.

Truly dreadful

Nobhead · 15/05/2012 20:47

No don't do it. Basil Fawlty, Basil Brush.

gregorisnotmyname · 16/05/2012 11:53

Oooh...clearly a marmite name. Giving this a bump to get a couple more opinions then I'll show the DP...have a feeling poor Baz's reputation's going to suffer a bit.

As others have said above, asking about a fairly uncommon name on an anonymous board will clearly get a lot of responses along the lines of herb and fawlty towers because those are the only associations people currently have when they hear Basil.

It will be a very different when you announce his name as people meet your lovely ds - their associations will instantly change in my experience.

Good luck!

thegreylady · 16/05/2012 19:21

No it goes with Cecil Cuthbert Claude etc

thegreylady · 16/05/2012 19:22

If you want nn Baz he could be Sebastian

Takver · 16/05/2012 19:34

SeventhEverything, just to say, my dog is called Basil, he is NOT a chihuahua, and it suits him beautifully.

I was a bit Blush after we named him and then discovered that it was our neighbour's (who rescued the puppies) brother's name.

I think its a good name for either a dog or a person - don't be put off by the dog connection, DH has the most normally boring 70s blokes name you could imagine and there are three dogs on our street called the same thing Grin

Takver · 16/05/2012 19:35

I do think Baz is hideous, though, and I'm not sure how you'd avoid it once he was a teenager . . .

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 10:01

Sorry, no - I think of Basil Fawlty and can just gear Prunella Scales screeching the name in my head.

That said, what snout of the generation of kids born now will know that?

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 10:02

'hear' not 'gear' and 'amount' not 'snout' stupid auto correct

BrigitBigKnickers · 18/05/2012 10:08

I either hear "Boom Boom!" or "BAAAAAAASSSSSSILL!!!!!" ala Sybil Faulty when ever I hear that name.

We use dto have a dog called Basil.

bobbledunk · 23/05/2012 01:01

Poor kid. Please don't.

tallwivglasses · 23/05/2012 01:15

I too had a cat called Basil. How about Sebastion (could be shortened to Bas? I knew a cool Bas once)

Graciescotland · 23/05/2012 01:22

Fawlty towers here too. I'm 32 and scraped into the seventies with minutes to spare.
