Opinions on Albert/Bertie?

Husband & I can't decide on a name for baby due in September. Son number 1 is named after my grandfather so I thought it might be nice to name son number 2 after my husband's grandfather, but not 100% convinced by Albert/Bertie.

What is your ds1 called? I really like Albert with the nn albie. It would be on my list if I were to have a second boy. Also like Hugo, Arthur and Theodore.

PacketOfBiscuits · 14/05/2012 13:58

I like Albert, don't like Bertie though.

sonniebonnie · 14/05/2012 14:06

Albie, along with Archie, Alfie, etc. are a little overused imo and will date more than more classic names. I think Hugo is great!

sonniebonnie · 14/05/2012 14:07

And Bertie sounds just as 'cutesy' as Albie, Archie, etc. imo.

MrsHelsBels74 · 14/05/2012 14:08

Son 1 is Frederick, usually Fred or Freddie

I like Bertie but Albert leaves me cold. It is too serious.

sugarspiceandallthingsnice324 · 14/05/2012 14:14

I love albert/albie/bertie. Fred and Bert or Freddie and Bertie sound great together and i love the fact that there is a family connection too.

Badgerina · 14/05/2012 14:46

I like Albert, but prefer Albie to Bertie.

PacketOfBiscuits · 14/05/2012 15:00

I think Al would be the nicest nickname for Albert.

fondantfancier · 14/05/2012 15:32

I love it (praying DH will let me have a 3rd DC to use it)
It good for all ages, Albie, Bertie when little, Bert and Al when grown up.
Al is fab.

Ihatepeas · 14/05/2012 16:15

On our list for dc1 due in November. I like it alot.. DH loves it!

wheniwishuponastar · 14/05/2012 16:58

I like Bertie. Makes me think of Jeeves and Wooster!

Purplelooby · 16/05/2012 18:47

I love Albert and would have called him Bertie when he was little, but as it happens it doesn't go with our surname and I am very jealous of people who can use it!

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 11:25

Love them, plus there is the option of 'Albie' :)

Smicha · 18/05/2012 13:26

Glad to see this thread as I've been deliberating over Bert/Bertie (Robert in full) for ages and wondered if anyone was having similar thoughts. I say go for it - Albert, shortened to Bert or Al. Destined to be a musician! (Don't ask me why, but Bert and Al just sound like musician names to me Confused)

SootySweepandSue · 18/05/2012 13:28

We ruled it out as we felt it was too cutesy.

My grandpa was a Bert/bertie although his name was Robert officially. His brother was Archie!

bigkidsdidit · 18/05/2012 13:29

I have one :)

It comes up periodically on here and splits opinion. Ours is Bertie now, he could easily be Al or Ally or the full Albert when he's older. It suits him so much now. Most people love it, a few 'oh right' s when we introduce him hardly any :)

MrsLetch · 18/05/2012 14:27

I rather liked Betrand nn Bertie when the pregnancy hormones had got to me after Bertrand Russell, but my Dh wouldn't let me. All he said was Bertie Bassett and he was right dammit--.
