Help! Kaili or Mia?

We're Estonian-Canadian and want a name that reflects our culture and isn't super common...she has already arrived and my husband likes both and says i have one week to decide! :) Kaili is pronounced Kylie and Mia would be pronounced the usual way. Her older brother is Mikk (like Mick).
Votes please!!!!!

Kaili will be pronounced kay-lee by most folk, so Mia mightbsave endless explanations in the future.

squoosh · 11/05/2012 15:56

I'd avoid Kaili as people will just think Kylie and that would be awful!

Go with Mia.

FriskyMare · 11/05/2012 15:56

Also thought Kay-lee. My vote goes to Mia.

HappyCamel · 11/05/2012 16:00

I'd pronounce Kaili as Kayleigh. Mia means "mine" which I don't think is a nice label for a person but if you do them it's probably the better option.

Mia

mrsbugsywugsy · 11/05/2012 16:08

Definitely Mia.

But I have heard it pronounced two ways: me-a and my-a

I know a little Mia and I can speak Spanish, but it had never occured to me till now that it means mine. Pronounce it my-a, if that bothers you.

Definitely Mia! Congratulations on your baby girl and good luck!

HecateTrivia · 11/05/2012 16:30

I prefer Mia, but I don't like matching names, (donna and dave with the kids dean, denise and debbie, iyswim Grin) so I'd have to go for the other one.

But Mia's nicer.

I have a niece called Nya.

Which has nothing to do with anything, other than Mia reminded me of it Hmm

MoonHare · 11/05/2012 16:52

Think she'd be in for a lifetime of irritation at having to explain the spelling/pronunciation of Kaili so I would say Mia.

Stellan · 11/05/2012 17:19

Mia.

Use Kaili as a middle name or spell it Kylie for simplicity/clarity of pronunciation.

Lannie33 · 11/05/2012 17:30

Looks like Mia is winning so far!

Both names can be pronounced in more than one way, and neither are names that are clearly Estonian or English/Canadian. Out of those two, I would pick Kaili, but I would think Helena, Kaisa, Laine, Mari, or Marika would fit your criteria better.

Mia

Any name pronounced Kylie will remind everyone of Kylie Minogue

Lannie33 · 18/05/2012 15:14

Thanks for feedback everyone. Mia is #17 where we live. Do people think there will be lots of other Mias in her class and did anyone not like growing up with a common name (i have a v unusal ethnic name).

I would choose Mia. We have 2 DDs and I wanted to name DD1 Mia, but DH and I had a stand-off between it and Naomi (his choice) so we went for a name we both liked, but which wasn't at the top of the list for either of us. I sometimes wish I'd stick to my guns and fought harder for Mia, although I do really love DD1's name now.

Mia was in the running for DD2, but just got pipped by the name we chose for her. If we ever have another daughter, I would sooooo choose Mia. I love the meaning ('mine') so lovely.

As it turns out, my real name was very popular when I was growing up (born in 1983) and it didn't really bother me. I'm one of a kind lol so having a common name wasnt a concern. My adorable daughter's names are fairly common, but they are lovely names so again, I'm not concerned x

Trestle · 18/05/2012 19:57

At no.17 it's unlikely there will be lots of others in the same class, or even one.

Lannie33 · 23/05/2012 16:04

I'm not too concerned about the meaning of Mia (i think "mine" is an endearing meaning) or of the pronunciation of Kaili (as I had to spell out my name all my life-would rather stick to the Estonian spelling to reflect her culture rather than go with the easier Kylie). Just if she's called overhead at the airport or something it'll certainly be "Caylee P...please return to the baggage claim" or something. But I don't think that's a dealbreaker either. When I said Kylie to a friend a few months ago she started singing "your lovin' is all i think about" but i guess there could be worse connotations than Kylie Minogue.

Interesting suggestions Derby. My brother would have been Kaisa had he been a girl and I have 3 cousins named Mari.
