Opinions on Rosemary please?

We are considering Rosemary as a strong contender middle name to be Catherine. They important part is the Mary as we have struggled over the past few months to get a form of Mary we loved. Molly is the closest thing we have agreed on.However we both like Rosemary too & most importantly it incorporates Mary.
How is Rosemary percieved at the moment? Nns would obviously be Rose, Rosie or possibly Maisy? Any opinions appreciated & is it more classic than Molly?

I think Rosemary is a beautiful name, not overused, timeless and certainly a lot more classic than Molly!! Also the nn Maisy is super cute!

MoonHare · 08/05/2012 22:11

I like Rosemary, I used to know a grown up one - she was fab and very beautiful her nn was Rosie.

TreesDogsBooks · 08/05/2012 22:15

Love it. Classic but not too popular.

LemonTurd · 08/05/2012 22:18

I love it! Biased though, as it's my lovely Granny's name :) It's on 'the list' for my theoretical DD.

LemonTurd · 08/05/2012 22:19

Btw, my Granny's nn's are Rose and sometimes Rosie.

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 08/05/2012 22:20

Love love love love it.

YummyMummybee · 08/05/2012 22:21

Thanks for the replies Rosemary is a new one we both agree on & it ticks the main box the Mary box!
Other 2 options as mentioned above Molly & also Mariella(possible nn's again Maisy, Millie). Out of the 3 names Molly, Mariella or Rosemary which would be the most unique at the moment & least likely to date? I
s there loads of Rose or Rosies around at the moment? Over here in Ireland Rose is mainly used as a middle name..

Great name. Lots of possibilities for it to grow with a child into what they want to be.

Rosie / molly is a pretty little one, rose feisty teen and Mary / rosemary a fully grown woman in her own right - surgeon barrister etc ( or a hippy stay at home earth mother - funny how it fits both!). Oh and Roz is the mechanic with several Harley davisons in bits in the kitchen !!

MoonHare · 08/05/2012 22:35

Don't like Molly or Maisy or Milly. Why bother with Mariella, which is unusual and then nn with something that's everywhere....

Go for Rosemary!

PatronSaintOfDucks · 08/05/2012 22:35

I love Rosemary. I also love the more "medieval" Rosamund.

PercyFilth · 08/05/2012 23:58

Sorry, but "the most unique at the moment" is nonsensical, do you mean unusual? Certainly not Molly.

As for least likely to date. Rosemary has not been fashionable for 40 or 50 years, but I'm not sure that it ever has been a 'trendy' name. This type of name doesn't really date. It's a good honest name, pretty but with a bit of piquancy to it. Starts out sounding like a flower but turns out to be a herb - which itself has lovely blue flowers! More than the sum of its parts.

Mariella is unusual largely because it's not English. For this reason it's also unlikely to date in the British Isles.

iloveACK · 09/05/2012 00:02

I seem to be in the minority, but I think it's a horrible name! Simply old fashioned without any appealing tendencies!

WithACherryOnTop · 09/05/2012 00:19

Love it.

Rosemary is far and away the best option out of those three.

Molly is so faddy and will date terribly.

Mariella is nice, but I'm so over Millie it's untrue.

Rosemary also has loads and loads of nn options.

lemonpoppyseed · 09/05/2012 03:07

I know a Rosemary who goes by the nickname Posy.

emmyloo2 · 09/05/2012 03:30

Love it. Absolutely love it. Far and away better than Molly which is very overused, cutesy and dated.

YummyMummybee · 09/05/2012 07:42

Thanks for all the replies-I don't know how many threads I have started in the past few months with different Mary variations!!! Think this may be the one, really like the way its honoring my mom in full with the Mary ending. Yes I guess it won't date & I love Rose/Rosie as nn... Rosemary Catherine is nice too. This naming business is so hard:(
We were almost 100% on Molly but there are alot around & its still mega popular. This is our first & we do not have much access to kids except our friends babies so is Rose or Rosie v popular in the U.K? Doubt it would be on the scale of Millie/Maisy?

Rosemary is a lovely name, you have such a choice on nicknames to, Posy, Rose, Rosie, Romy.

The name Rosie is quite popular in the UK, but Rosemary isn't so she will probably be the only one in her class.

SodoffBaldrick · 09/05/2012 08:36

Nowhere near on the scale of Millie/Maisie.

Seriously, Rosemary is great.

MarySA · 09/05/2012 09:29

I love it too. It's such a classic timeless name. And a great choice of shortforms.

WhatSheSaid · 09/05/2012 09:30

Lovely name.

PercyFilth · 09/05/2012 10:21

I knew a Rosemary at school who went by Romy.

Psammead · 09/05/2012 12:14

Rosemary is beautiful.

YummyMummybee · 09/05/2012 20:52

Thanks again for the advice. We found boys names much easier as we werent trying to name after a family member...
Yes love Rosemary-Percy Romy v cute nn.

Just finally Rosemary is a better tribute to my mom Mary as opposed to our other choices isn't it? Its more obvious than Mariella or Molly due to the Rosemary at the end.
Would you automatically think she is named after her granny?
