Non-biblical names?

toomuchtooyoung · 05/05/2012 06:19

ds due in a few months and starting to think of names. Are there any/many without a biblical reference. Surname begins with an R, and would prefer something European to reflect very mixed heritage. Dd begins with L so probably best to steer clear of that and Dh rhymes with marvin.
Help, need some inspiration!

There are many names. Perhaps look at ones which have a Roman or Greek heritage? Do you want something well known that will work in many countries? Here are a few to get you started, with the British version first:

Alexander / Alessandro / Alejandro
Anthony / Antonio
Francis / Francesco
Julian / Julius
Oscar / Oskar
Richard / Riccardo
Victor / Viktor
William / Wilhelm

There are loads that aren't biblical i'm sure, what's your heritage?
I don't think any of these are biblical but double check if it's important to you:
Anouck
Tessa

Milo
Rowan

poppy283 · 05/05/2012 07:11

Weren't there a few Romans in the bible though scatterplot?
I haven't personally read it but i'm pretty sure...

Scatterplot · 05/05/2012 07:20

Yes, but most aren't. You can always google a particular name to check. For example, Julius does appear in the Bible but it's a very minor mention. I don't think of it as a Biblical name, unlike say John or Sarah.

toomuchtooyoung · 05/05/2012 08:08

Thanks for the names so far, Milo is the kind of name that stands out to me, but then it also screams cbeebies at me.

I would like something that's not obviously one nationality or another for fear of favouring one of the many arms of his heritage! I would out myself if I named them.

I just find boys names a bit uninspiring and bland, but I have only just started looking....

Frederick
Jasper

Tessa is biblical - she's in the Old Testament.

What sort of names do you like?

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 05/05/2012 08:31

Nico?

Scatterplot · 05/05/2012 08:35

If you like Milo, how about:

Aldo
Elmo
Marius
Mauro
Max
Orlo
Vito
Xander

Vijac · 05/05/2012 08:38

I love Inigo.

EdithWeston · 05/05/2012 08:38

The Biblical version of Tessa is Thirza.

I think people would see it now as nn for Theresa, so if that was BC name, the link us broken (different derivation). But of course many might make their first association a Christian one because of Mother Theresa.

Do you also want to avoid saints, early Christians, martyrs, Popes?

toomuchtooyoung · 05/05/2012 08:43

The non-biblical thing comes from dh, I don't see the connection unless it's really obvious. I prefer short names.

Dh has already said no to zane, Finn, Seth, arlo, Joel, Jake, Evan. I have said no to his suggestion of Fraser or anything from the muppets!

What about Rex or Max?

ripsishere · 05/05/2012 08:52

Louis? Arthur? William?
Does he mean old as well as new testament. Adam is a great name.

toomuchtooyoung · 05/05/2012 09:06

Yep, old and new, and Adam screams bible even to me!

Max i like but very popular around here, and the williams/arthurs leave me cold

I thought girls names were hard enough, but boys are proving very difficult!

Place names, modern names and non-Romance names might be the ones

Stanley, Brayden, Richard, Norman, Harvey, Dylan, Fergus, Declan?

Florence, Beverley, Jade, Kelly, Kylie, Ethel, Edith, Eleanor, Sian?

LynetteScavo · 05/05/2012 09:11

Go some something celtic, maybe?

I don't recall any Bruce's or Hamish's in the Bible.

LynetteScavo · 05/05/2012 09:12

Are you avoiding saints names as well?

toomuchtooyoung · 05/05/2012 09:28

We have a hamish in the family already. I like Dylan but again very very popular around here

Couldn't find any saints names that did anything for me, but happily proved wrong, and dh may not even realise any connection

I guess Luke's to biblical. How about Miles, Seth, Aiden, Finley, Otto, Thor, Tom, Ivor or Asher.

Vijac · 05/05/2012 10:36

Too!

EdithWeston · 05/05/2012 10:39

Seth, Tom and Asher are all Biblical, though, and Aidan is a prominent early saint.

Is DP's objection to an obvious Christian association, or more narrowly Biblical?

MoonlightandRoses · 05/05/2012 10:43

The site www.behindthename.com is great for giving quite a range, handily split into French / German / Roman / Greek etc.

EdithWeston · 05/05/2012 10:54

Some more:

Elliot, Bruno, Frederick, Rupert, Robert, Alastair, Alan, Dominic, Angus, Gary, Graham, Harry, Kenelm, Iain, Quentin, Sebastian, Neville, Ronald, Percy, Leon, Oliver?

Emily, Carinthia, Desdemona, Felicity, Joyce, Layla, Jessica, Mabel, Yvette, Adele, Vanessa, Leonie, Jasmine, Clarissa, Pamela, Sandra, Savannah, Alexandra, Ursula?

toomuchtooyoung · 05/05/2012 11:44

Oooh, thanks for that link. Will have a look when I have some time.

Dh objection to non-biblical actually covers every denomination, trouble is he hasn't really contributed anything to the suggestions, just says no. He'd probably quite like a made up name from star trek!

Thanks for all your thoughts so far. Hopefully DS will end up with something we can agree on, but it's a good job there's a while to go. Dd wasn't named for two weeks after birth for this very reason
