April in May

We have had no discussions on names, but as this baby was due so close to a big wedding - tomorrow, and the scan said she'd come in April that has been the name I joked about at first and DP said would be good. I've grown to like it and can't think of another so...
Can I call a baby born in May April?
Can I call a baby April when we already have a May?
Can I use April when someone else on my antenatal thread got there first? I've asked if she'll mind, but she's probably a bit tied up with her baby April - born in April!
I like old lady names that are known yet not ever so common.
Avril has been suggested, but I'm not keen.

I wouldn't be at all bothered by having an April born in May. (Not all Hollys are Xmas babies).

Are you saying that dd1 is called May? If so I would personally steer clear of April. It sounds a bit like calling children by the days of the week. It feels impersonal and careless.

Sorry. Both lovely names, just not together.

chocolatecoffinplease · 04/05/2012 20:06

What are your old lady choices?

Babylon1 · 04/05/2012 20:09

Chocolatec coffin, you're so right!!

My Holly Robyn was born in august, and I'm an Xmas day baby, Fiona Jayne!!

I don't think April in may or may in April matters at all!!

PercyFilth · 04/05/2012 20:11

You can't compare it with Holly. Holly is a tree, it's always there, it doesn't just appear at Christmas and then disappear!

But if you have a May, then I think April born in May is a definite no-no.

Harecare · 04/05/2012 20:47

I also have an Ivy. Just May and April might be silly, but having Ivy too takes it away a bit. Doesn't it?
DD1 - May, DD2 Ivy DD3 April??
I had thought Joy to keep them all short and sweet, but DP doesn't like it.
I don't know any other Aprils.
I like Rose, but I know a Rose and I think it's more popular.

RillaBlythe · 04/05/2012 20:51

I think May and April is too much TBH. But I wouldn't let the fact someone off the internet has also used it put you off.

PercyFilth · 04/05/2012 20:57

If you want to keep it topical, how about Raine? :o

Harecare · 04/05/2012 20:59

Ha ha! Would go even better with their last name.

OP posts:
Harecare · 04/05/2012 21:04

So basically being called April, but born in May isn't the problem, it's the fact that her big sister is called May.
I'm less bothered by that.

OP posts:
Weasar · 04/05/2012 21:06

I think calling her April when born in may is fine, and wouldn't worry about someone on a thread using it already.
However I think the fact that you already have a may makes it a bit silly, despite the fact that Ivy breaks them up a bit, sorry!
FWIW, I think Avril is lovely and wouldnt seem so silly. Rose is also nice Smile

Harecare · 04/05/2012 21:14

I do see how it is silly, but I still think it's a far prettier name than Avril or Rose.
I think people may think I'm silly for choosing April, but it's not something she'll be picked on over. I don't think anyone would think she had a silly name because her sister is called May.
Hmmm...

KenDoddsDadsDog · 04/05/2012 21:18

I know an April born in May! I can't remember anyone making a big deal of it at the time.

PercyFilth · 04/05/2012 21:21

Call her June :o

Harecare · 04/05/2012 21:27

People have joked if May was born later would she be called June. The answer is NO!! I don't like June, but April is nice.
For all I know DP has vetoed it now. He did suggest Amy earlier, but I have a niece called Amy.
May wants her to be called Lilly - too many of those already, or May! Grin

I loved April too but do said no.... What about Violet or Alice?

Scatterplot · 05/05/2012 06:54

I think you sound determined to have April if you can! It's a lovely name, the only thing that would bother me is also having a May. The phrase "to smell of April and May", indicating flirting/courtship, is too old-fashioned to be familiar these days, but It might be worth noting.

Ivy and May are both plants. If DH vetoes April, how about:

Bryony
Clover
Daphne
Hazel
Olive
Rosemary
Violet

Scatterplot · 05/05/2012 06:54

Sorry, DP not DH!

Harecare · 05/05/2012 07:47

Thanks Scatterplot, those are good choices. Olive and Hazel are nicest, but I know little girls with those names already. Violet is good, but we used to call my brother violent violet when we were little!
I reckon I'll risk an attack of the sillies if we go for April. There are 5 years between May and DD3 so the 2 of them will never be bothered by it, it'll just be relatives and friends of mine who think I'm a bit daft. I can take that!
chocolatecoffin the old lady names I like that haven't been used by friends are May, Ivy and April!
Ah, the only other one I like is Pansy after one of my Mum's cousins, but I'm put off by the zingzillas.

OP posts:
DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 05/05/2012 07:53

Pansy is so pretty :) love it (what's a Zingzilla?!!)

April in May is fine. My great aunts are called June and May :)

Some suggestions:

Iris
Ruby
Posie
Polly/Dolly/Molly
Pearl

chocolatecoffinplease · 05/05/2012 08:15

Love Joy!! So anti current trends, and goes v well with Ivy and May. Any chance you might be able to convince DP??

posypoo · 05/05/2012 08:47

My great aunt is called June and her birthday is in July and nobody has ever really commented on it. I think it's fine, and that April is a lovely name, but then I am biased as my baby was born in April! I think it's also fine to call her April when you have a May. When when people are called something, the other meanings of that word usually go away anyway.

Harecare · 07/05/2012 08:20

Thanks Posy, interestingly I floated the April idea at a family wedding this weekend where everyone knows May and nobody linked the 2. I think it looks sillier written down and unconnected to actual people than it does in real life.
zingzillas are on cbeebies and one of them is called Panzee, pronounced like Pansy. Thanks for your ideas daisymaisy, I like Posie best of those.
I like Joy for it's 3 lettered simplicity and not knowing any children called Joy and I have a good middle name for it, so perhaps I'll present DP with my 3 ideas when she eventually comes and see which he goes for.
Don't have a middle name for Pansy though...

OP posts:
abbypumpkin · 07/05/2012 11:25

I think April is lovely and wouldn't have even considered what month she is born in. Was may born in may?
I wouldn't worry about the connection. People are so concerned about 'sibsets' and matching or not matching rather than just using the names they love. They are individuals and will only live in the same house an possibly thought of together for only a few years. I imagine people wll oly really notice when you write Xmas cards!

applepieinthesky · 07/05/2012 12:30

I think Joy is really nice and goes well with May and Ivy.
