Any views? I am not sure how I feel about it.

I like it and would use it.

A good, strong Biblical name; easy to spell and pronounce; good for a builder or a doctor or an artist - anyone could be a John; ticks my boxes.

It's a good solid name. Won't set the world alight but also it'll never embarrass him. Unless you're being very trendy and meant John for a girl? :)

Johnny is a great nickname.

John for a girl.... no gotta say, say never thought of that! It's for a boy.

We chose John as a middle name for DS1, we really like it and it's also DHs middle name and my Dad's first name, so tbh was chosen for sentimental reasons really. But I do really like the name.

I think John is a good, solid name. I am biased as I have a William John (after his two grandfathers) but still, it's a name I'd like even if I didn't have one :o

John is a great classic, underused name. Great choice!

I like John, considering it for future DS's.

Like it, strong, simple, classic and really love Johnny/Johnnie. Just realised I don't like Jonathan though for some reason (not that anyone's suggested it!)

God, how boring would it be though if I called my kids John and Jane? Might do it anyway :)

I prefer John to Jonathan too. There's a little Johnnie in my DD'd class - it's one of those names that can grow up as they get older - Johnnie/Jonny to John.

I love John. Johnny is sweet for a wee boy too.
I have two DSs, and wanted to call the first John. My parents said don't do it! Johns never turn out well....my brother is called John!

I prefer Jonathan, then they have the option of shortening it to Jon when older.

Jonathan is soooo eighties, it's an estate agents name, it's a vile name. It's a name I actually despise, and I hate, hate, hate when men are called Jon. WTF is that about. Stick an h in there you fools!

I have a Jonathan. I love it as it is so versatile and so does my DS. Most people call him Jonny. So I would say go for it.

So dull. You have a chance to name your child anything you desire, why choose one of the blandest and over used names ever?

I'm with squoosh on Jonathan/Jonathon. Can't explain it, but I just can't stand 'Jon'.

Not keen keen on Jonatha/on. I see what you mean Lovelychops but then again, I have not spotted in the top 100 last year, so it certainly is not mega popular at the mo. DS first name is quite unusual so I am not sure it would work i.e. Toaster and John.

DalM, you never mentioned your first child was named Toaster until now. In that case - much as I like John - you'll have to go for somthing like Kettle or Blender for your second one, don't you think?

Nah, Kettle is too girlie! Might give Blender a thought though.

Good point DialMforMummy about the top 100 names. I think because when I was in school (80's & 90's) it was common then so I still think of it as a popular name?

John is a great name. It is powerful enough to overcome any negative coonotations (eg American slang for toilet, johnny for condom). You cannot go wrong with John. Timeless and classless.

I like Jonathan as well (though not Jon without the h). I know a Jonathan who is known as Joe though, so it's quite versatile. It does get spelt wrong which can be an annoyance.

I like John. Both my grandads were called it. It is a strong classic but you rarely come across a baby John. You should go for it IMO!
