How do you intend to pronounce it? Mah-ree or Marry?

nizlopi · 03/05/2012 15:05

Its a lovely name :)

nizlopi · 03/05/2012 15:06

Although apparently it means 'Sea of Bitterness'.

booomchikkawowow · 03/05/2012 15:06

I think Mari is pronounced 'marry' - or at least that's how the Northern Irish girl I knew with the name said it.

gaunyerseljeannie · 03/05/2012 15:08

THere are some in Scotland though its more common to hear that pronunciation with the spelling Mairi or Mhairi, but I do know a couple of Marie-Marrys Grin

squoosh · 03/05/2012 15:08

I prefer Maria, more classic.

Marie is a bit 70's.

gaunyerseljeannie · 03/05/2012 15:08

oh sorry..... and it is nice either way Smile

Marie = Mar-ee (emphasis on ee)

Mary = Mare-y (emphasis on Mare)

love.

also, the name is extremely ancient and experts can't agree what the original meaning was. they can't even agree if it has a Hebrew origin, or an Egyptian one.

it might mean "rebellion", "love", "wished-for child", or "bitter/salty sea". no-one actually knows.

Very lovely name..

The MAH-ree version is used in Ireland as well as mar-EE.
The mar-EE pronunciation is probably more popular, with MAR-ee an older pronunciation.
