Baby names

Names that work in English and German (and don't sound too German!)

I'm English, raised in Wales, DP is German. We live in Germany.

Surname is short, one syllable beginning with R.

I'm looking for longish girls names, 3 or 4 syllables. So far we can agree on Cecilia or Isolde. I like Beatrice and Amandine but DP isn't keen. Genevieve is a possibility but its a mouthful in German!

Middle name would be Anna, Sophia or (probably) Theresa after family.

Boys I'm finding impossible. I love Benjamin, DP hates it. He loves Fritz Hmm

We can agree on Welsh boys names eg Iolo, Ieuan, Iestyn, which are all pronounceable in German but not from the spelling, iyswim.

I'm stuck! I would really appreciate

  1. input on names we have
  2. further suggestions
  3. opinions on whether giving a boy in Germany a Welsh name is downright cruel?

TIA Smile

We're in the same position. I almost wish I'd gone for something totally un-German - at least then they make the effort to pronounce it properly, rather than thinking they know how. We have a Harriet and a Beatrice - I also like.

Flora
Louisa
Elisabeth
Isabel

and for boys:

Hugo
Benedict
Raphael
Eduard
Vincent
Albert

I would avoid Fritz - if you ever had to move to the UK, he'd be ridiculed.

I went to uni with a Svenja - not remotely English but easy to pronounce for an English speaker.

I would save anything welsh for a middle name.

Katerina?

If husband wants Fritz then what about Frederick and nn Fritz.

What about Macsen for a boy? Then you get Max as a shortening which is pretty univeral.

Hi,
I'm looking for a girl's name that works in both German and English.
Our baby's middle name will be Irena - after MIL.
I like Jasmine, but as the Germans pronounce every letter, I think it might rhyme a bit too much (Jasmine=Yas-mean-ugh)!
I also like Sakura, which is Japanese for cherry blossom. I realise that's completely different Inn both England & Germany.
My other idea so far is Esther.

Please tell me your opinions & other similar suggestions!
Thanks!

It may have been mentioned but I believe Emma is a popular girls’ name in Germany, as are Sofia/Sophia, Mia, Hannah. All work perfectly in English and German.

Esther is nice, and not too overused (the same cannot be said for Sophia, Hannah, Emma, Emily etc., which, although lovely names, have been done to death in Germany).

I second Anna. Or how about Frieda or Rebecca?

I love the name Mareike, I think it's beautiful.

From your initial list:
Cecilia or Isolde - I like these two.
Beatrice - nope
Amandine - pretty but a bit wishy washy

Anything.

I have some German friends. One called Rene. One called Simone. One called Sophie.

Germans dont just give their dc traditional German names.
