Nice. Getting popular in some places. But pretty, with nice shortenings.

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/05/2012 11:46

Loads of them a few years ago.

Disneydreams · 01/05/2012 11:52

Is it still popular? Wondered if I'd missed the boat on that one really but I love it and goes well with my other dc Irish name Grin

If you love it - go for it. I know of several at DDs school - probably ages 7 - 11. My DHs nephew called their first born Caitlin - I think she is 4 now. They kept the name a secret and made a big fanfare when they announced it - which left me Confused as I knew several.

I wouldn't let popularity put me off, unless it was some made up name or a sleb fashion.

birdofthenorth · 01/05/2012 12:02

names.darkgreener.com/#caitlin

Apparently it peaked in popularity in 2001 when it hit number 21 in the charts, now it has fallen to 66, so not so popular now. Might still date though sue to having been fashionable -and worst case scenario people might think she's 50 when she's 40!! But there won't be 3 in her class if the current positioning is anything to go by.

Alligatorpie · 01/05/2012 12:08

Dh wanted to all dc2 Caitlyn, but the popularity factor put me off. I do like it though.

Disneydreams · 01/05/2012 12:09

I'm not bothered about popularity. Much prefer popular to names like pompom-gaga or such like that people make up but yes don't want to age her lol. Haven't heard it for a long time so I suppose it has been and gone. Still love it thou Wink thanks ladies. X

I know one aged 10, nice name not too popular and not to unusual.

Nice nn

Positiveplus · 01/05/2012 13:12

I like it and it would be on our shortlist if DH hadnt vetoed it!!

It's frequently misspelled. If that will make you Angry then possibly better to choose something else! Irish people will probably say that it's frequently mispronounced too Grin

BBQJuly · 01/05/2012 14:50

I don't like it, sorry.

DidntGetTheMemo · 01/05/2012 15:57

Not keen. Bogus pronunciation of a lovely Irish name. Very 1980s High School Drama. Sorry.

MoonHare · 01/05/2012 16:00

I like Caitlin.

It was on my shortlist for DD2 but DH wasn't keen and various people I knew turned up their noses (a bit 'chavvy' apparently?!?). Then at a local playbarn there was a little Caitlin with her loud-mouthed mother and it put me right off. So DD2 is called something completely different.

However I do still like it, though admittedly not enough for it to be restored to the shortlist for DC3.

Disneydreams · 01/05/2012 17:43

Ikwym moonhare. I feel the same with names such as cayden. Sounds a bit samey actually Sad

How are people pronouncing it? What's the difference between the Irish and American way? maybe I'll go for Lily instead Grin

AThingInYourLife · 01/05/2012 17:51

Caitlín rhymes with Potchleen.

Well, when pronounced properly in Irish it doesn't. But in English that's your closest approximation.

If you want to call your baby Kate-Lynne, then spell it properly :o

Disneydreams · 01/05/2012 19:02

I'm curious now as to how it is actually pronounced in irish. I take it Kate Lynne is the American version. Still like Caitlin spelling, Kate Lynne sound Grin and amongst the hundreds in the uk, I don't think anyone will expect it to be pronounced cotchleen Wink

OP posts:
AThingInYourLife · 01/05/2012 19:25

The Irish pronunciation is hard to explain in English, the sounds don't exist.

Imagine the tch sound being far more delicate, pronounced with your Tongue at the front of your mouth. That'll give you most of it :)

Disneydreams · 01/05/2012 19:28

Oh I like it Grin

OP posts:
AThingInYourLife · 01/05/2012 19:32

It's lovely :)

It also has almost three syllables - cait-i-lín

Even in Ireland it would be Cotchleen though, unless you hung around with Irish speakers.

Disneydreams · 01/05/2012 19:36

Ikwym! Thankyou Grin
