Help with girls name shortlist :)

Would be grateful for opinions on our names shortlist as DH and I are finding it too hard to pick a favourite. Four year old DS is Freddie Liam but this will be first baby girl. Names in no particular order are:

Poppy
Maisy
Blossom
Mabel
Lacey-May
Hope
Faith
Molly/Polly
Rosie
Ella
Millie

Any help in shortenning the shortlist would be much appreciated as would any middle name suggestions, ( Jasmine and Grace being possible considerations.)

Poppy
Maisy
Blossom
Mabel
Lacey-May
Hope
Faith
Molly/Polly
Rosie
Ella
Millie

They all seem quite cutsey apart from Hope and Faith , so I would go for one of those.

Poppy

IMO they all sound like children's names to me, and not adult names.

I also think they all (apart from Hope) sound like nicknames or shortened versions of a name, which is a bit limiting.

Why not give a full, proper name, which will work when they are an adult / grown-up, and use the nickname/childish version while they are a child?

(Just my opinion by the way, no offence intended, please ignore if you disagree: they are all lovely names for a little girl with chubby cheeks and bunchies!)

IMO they sound like children's names because they are currently children's names. When they are adults they will sound like adult names because they will be adults. I have worked with older Mollys, Ellas, Mabels etc. and they don't seem in the least bit childish to me. I'm sure the same discussion was had 30-40 years ago with the Claire, Karen, Nicolas of that time. I currently can't imagine an old lady of that name, but there very obviously will be.

Poppy is a beautiful name. I have a Molly so biased towards that name too

Kaekae · 06/05/2012 22:04

I like Poppy I have a 2 year old Poppy Elizabeth but it is SO popular now. If we are at a soft play there will be loads of them and we all turn round when it gets called out - I think it will start to date quickly. So for that reason I'd opt for something less popular. Out of the other names you've listed I like Millie I would use Millicent or Amelia and Millie as a nn. Ella is nice; quite classic sounding, again, I would go for Eleanor and Ella as nn.

Poppy Grace - sorry but I'm not convinced that poppy works once the toddler

years are over though might just be that I've never known an older poppy
Maisy - really like was on my list but dismissed as above
Blossom- not 'namey' enough for me
Mabel- nan's name and really don't like old fashioned coming back
Lacey-May- hate double barrelled names and find Lacey a bit american
Hope - lovely, timeless name will work for any age
Faith - as above
Molly/Polly- don't like polly because of parrot, pocket, Anna and put the kettle on. Molly much better
Rosie - ok
Ella - nice, works on any age
Millie- not fond but nothing wrong with it

Poppy - Supertrendy but pretty. Pair with a more classic middle name: Poppy Grace is a bit bland and Poppy Jasmine sounds like a list of plants in a garden centre.

Maisy - A bit girlish. Lacking substance. Sounds cute. Personally would like my daughter to have a more versatile name.

Blossom - 90s TV series. Lovely as a middle name provided it's not following another flower name. Do not saddle child with a name like Cherry Blossom or something!

Mabel - Love.

Lacey-May - No. But I really dislike all hyphenated names.

Hope - Nice.

Faith - Nice.

Molly/Polly - OK.

Rosie - Love as a nickname for Rose, Rosalind, Rosamund, etc.

Ella - OK. I much prefer it to Ellie but Eleanor, Ellen, Elodie, Eloise would be even better in my books.

Millie - See Maisy. All the girls I know with this name were Millennium babies so it seems a bit dated to me in 2012.

Stellan · 29/05/2012 10:04

I know a Poppy who is about 19/20 now. It suits her as she has quite an exuberant personality but I'm not sure if it'd be any good on a shrinking violet or someone who want's so energetic! It's a high energy name, definitely.

Stellan · 29/05/2012 10:04

*Wasn't (not want's!)

HalleB · 30/05/2012 04:51
