Is it inevitable that Malachi will be shortened?

This is the only boys name so far that dh and I really love but we're not keen on Mal or Kai as nicknames. How easy do you think it will be to keep the full name?

I've never known a Malachi to be shortened but I've never been peers with one - I think ones peers will almost invariably shorten a name.

Takver · 29/04/2012 19:39

I know two boys with variants on the name, one is in primary school and often does get called Mal (but by his family, so I guess they're happy with that, other people generally don't seem to shorten). The other is only little & goes by his full name AFAIK

Badgerina · 29/04/2012 19:41

I would say yes, but only because I tend to choose either short names, or names that can be shortened. I really don't like Kai so this would put me off Malachai.

BikeRunSki · 29/04/2012 19:42

The only one I know is 8 and is nn Malc or Maz.

HecateTrivia · 29/04/2012 19:43

Most names are shortened, I think. certainly by their mates.

MoonHare · 29/04/2012 21:16

Adults are very unlikely to shorten your child's name unless you do. Children often give each other nicknames, boys more than girls as they get older but by the time they're doing so the child in question is old enough to express a preference and if they don't mind then, fair enough. I think it's true to say though that boys nns are most often based around their surname than first name anyway.

My parents were at great pains to give my brother a name that can not be shortened - all his friends call him a shortened version of his surname and have done since about 8 years old. He even has it on his personalised number plate.

I think a nickname is pretty likely TBH. Great name though!

southeastastra · 29/04/2012 21:17

would hope so, it's awful

tammytoby · 29/04/2012 21:35

I know a six year old Malachi who is known by his full name. It is easy enough to say. My daughter has a 3 syllable name and it is never shortened (she's 10).

BringBack1996 · 29/04/2012 22:10

I think it's more likely to be Mal than Kai but IMO it doesn't have to be either if you don't want it to be.

NomenOmen · 29/04/2012 22:16

Nickname him Buck and enjoy everyone's confusion!

FranticBanana · 29/04/2012 22:19

Mine was going to have nn Cai but the Rooneys got their hands on it, so he is always Malachi now (he's 3). Except when we get Mal-Archie, or Malakee, from people who have no idea how to pronounce it. Oh, and his big sister calls him Bob! Grin

cheesesarnie · 29/04/2012 22:28

all ones i know are mali.

agree with SEA though

badtime · 30/04/2012 15:45

FranticBanana, Malachy is a real name pronounce Malakee - perhaps they're confused about which name it is rather than not knowing how to pronounce it.

badtime · 30/04/2012 15:46

I have a friends called Malachi, he is known as Mally.

FranticBanana · 30/04/2012 18:53

Badtime , I think I get all cat's-bum-mouth about Malachy / Malakee because someone once said, "Ooh Malachy, that's a good name - did you get it off of Hollyoaks?!"

That anyone should think such a thing... Grin

exoticfruits · 30/04/2012 19:27

Absolutely impossible-unless they insist on themselves and I bet they won't.

smearedinfood · 30/04/2012 21:56

I have a Malachy we call him Maly for short. At first people made cracks about him being a bit of Malarkey but we are pretty relaxed about it. Grin
