...does she constantly get called Marion or Mary Anne?

All the Marions and Mary's I know are mid-forties or older so I think you shouldn't have much trouble with getting Marianne pronounced correctly.

It's pretty and unusual without being difficult.

I know 2one a grown woman (my friends mother laughs) and one is 4 both pronounced Marianne.. It is a pretty name

kickingKcurlyC · 22/04/2012 12:56

The one I know is mostly known as Marry.

WottingerAndWottingerAreDead · 22/04/2012 21:14

don't know any but ooo it's a lovely name

Clawdy · 22/04/2012 23:20

Leonard Cohen's Marianne,Marianne Faithfull...what's not to like? Lovely name.

lisad123 · 22/04/2012 23:23

Grew up with one and she was always Marianne

TinkerMaloo · 23/04/2012 19:42

My daughter is Marianne (19 months) and at least 50% of people call her Mary-Anne... it pissed me off. Even her grandad stresses is wrongly and says MA-rian when it should be mari-ANNE if that makes sense.

I love her name though and I will cope :) (praying for Maz not to turn up though, am pushing for 'em' if anythinhg...)

DogEared · 23/04/2012 20:27

It's a lovely name. Sense and Sensibility. :)

seeker · 23/04/2012 23:26

Oh, not the Sense and Sensibility- she was such a twit!

How about Elinor instead?

ratspeaker · 24/04/2012 10:06

Over the years I've heard Marion, Mary Ann and in one case Ann Marie
But most people get it right. A gentle correction usually puts it right, ie repeating it correctly when they get it wrong

another famous Marianne en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marianne

Pasiphae · 24/04/2012 10:27

I know a grown up one, who never has any problem with people mis-pronouncing it.
And a little Mariamne (Mariamee) way more tricky.
Great name, but not if your French, way to patriotic.

scummymummy · 24/04/2012 19:27

I like the sense and sensibility one! she's a far more likable and adventurous character than Elinor, imo. apparently Jane Austen thought do too and regretted that her plot demanded punishment of the sensibility character.

HoldTouchEngage · 24/04/2012 22:26

I once had a LOVELY and VERY SWEET (slovakian) girl on my team at work called Marianne and her name was NEVER pronounced incorrectly! We worked on a Hotel Reception desk dealing with all sorts of nationalities!

I must admit OH and I have it on a shortlist for if we ever need another Wink

Bearcrumble · 28/04/2012 22:26

I have one (a very new one) and the only person to call her Mary-Anne so far is my MIL. Repeatedly.
