Not sure if Evangeline is too much...

Any thoughts? We are having a difficult time deciding on names. I'm not so sure about the nicknames. DH and I don't even have a preference for nn (Eva or Evie). That's not so good, is it, if we don't even have a preference!? The name does hold some family significance though my mother hates it. But it's the only name DH and I can kinda agree on (he prefers Katherine though).

We thought about it for dd, with the nn Genie, but we were afraid of her turning into another Evie, so we used it as one of her middle names. It is beautiful, if you can manage to not use a nn, or use a more uncommon nn (Genie, Gigi, Angie - Love Angie!)

I love Evangeline, it's lovely, the nn will evolve with your child, you will know whether nn eva/evie suits her best or her nursery/friends will decide.

I also think Evangeline is lovely. I much prefer it to Evie or Ellie or Eve and personally wouldn't let others shorten it.
Evelyn is lovely too.
I also like your dhs suggestion of Katherine.
I have a Catherine (much prefer this original spelling btw!) and it is very uncommon amongst little girls, yet classic too.

I like Evangeline.
Also like Emmeline [sp?].

My dd (age 4) is called Evangeline. I think it's a marmite name - me, dh and my mum absolutely love it, my gran thinks its a bloody awful name.

Most people call her Evangeline, not Evie. I think this is because we call her by her proper name, and most people will follow whatever the parents do. At school, we had to fill out forms saying what our children are 'known as', and so she is called Evangeline by her teachers and the other children in her class.

I quite like all the nn (and it gives her lots of pretty options when she gets older), but think that I have gone to all the trouble of choosing a name that I totally love, and it would be daft to call her something entirely different. So I don't encourage people to shorten it. It hasn't been a problem, because most people hear me call her Evangeline and just follow suit.

Thanks so much everyone! I love the Marmite name reference! Its also nice to hear someone who doesn't shorten the name. I wouldn't shorten it but thought since everyone in this country automatically shortens names at least I should have a say! Our oldest DD is 4 and she has decided NO ONE will shorten her name even though we had a nn picked out (though we never actually used it)! I did the same thing at that age - my family picked out a nn but one day I said no to that and have been going by my long name ever since (till I moved to the UK where everyone shortens it which is weird as I now am expected to answer to any of the many nn my name has). Not that I stare daggers at anyone!
