Is it a no-no having a name that rhymes with (and is very similar to) a parents name?

that's it really. I think we may have finally agreed on a boys name but is pretty similar to dp's. Is that really crap?

It's personal taste.

I'd never do it but there are plenty of people who do. I'm afraid I find it rather naff.

RnB · 19/04/2012 16:30

that's what I'm afraid of MrsLettuce. It was only after we agreed we both liked the name that I realised how similar it is to dp's name!

Like Lenny and Benny? I think it sounds mildly silly, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

BBQJuly · 19/04/2012 16:34

I think it might sound a bit funny, sorry.

Stellan · 19/04/2012 16:36

Plenty of people (used to) name their children after themselves so I don't think it's any worse to have a dad called Barry and a son called Harry or a dad Jack and a son Zach.

I think it depends on the names to a certain extent - if they are both common in their respective generations, it won't raise an eyebrow but if they're a bit unusual, it might make them stand out. A Curt and a baby Bert might stand out more or a Derek and a baby Eric.

RnB · 19/04/2012 16:37

oh heck, the only other name we agree on is too similar too our daughter's name! Grrrrrrr

I wouldn't have minded it (one of my favourite boy's names sounds similar to DH's name). DH is massively against it, so it's lucky we had girls.

In my brother's class at school there were 5(!) boys who had the male version of their mum's name (Christopher and Christine, Mark and Marcia, Paul and Pauline, Patrick and Patricia, and Nicholas and Nikki) So it certainly wasn't a no-no in the mid 80s Grin

RnB · 19/04/2012 16:38

they are both quite unusual Stellan ((> Darius & Lucius>>))

come to think of it, my brother is Derrick and my dad Eric :)

Darius and Lucius don't really rhyme that much, do they? I don't know how you pronounce Darius; is it DAR-ee-us or da-RIE-us? Lucius can be LOO-shus or LOO-see-us too. Depending on how you choose to pronounce your baby's name, it's avoidable.

If I'm right, Lucius is the name you're considering - how about Lucian (LOO-shan or LOO-see-en) or Lucien instead?

With Derek and Eric, I meant it would raise eyebrows today (since not many babies are called Eric) but back when your brother was born, I'm sure it was like my Barry and Harry example!

Psammead · 19/04/2012 16:49

Oh that's fine.

RnB · 19/04/2012 16:58

Really!?

Yes Lucius is the baby name. Love Lucian too, (got the idea from another thread today) but dp doesn't unfortunately.

To be honest, RnB, if your dad is Eric and your brother Derrick, you can definitely pass it off as a family tradition for sons' names to be like their Dads' names!

RnB · 19/04/2012 17:05

lol! I may even start a trend :)

Psammead · 19/04/2012 17:07

Congrats on finding the name! I like it.

Can't use it, mind, because we have a Lucia, and that really would be sailing too close to the wind Grin

lovechoc · 19/04/2012 17:19

If you are both agreed upon a name you love, then why not? It's hard enough trying to agree on a name (we found this!) and agreed on a boys name for DS2 which is similar to my own name. Never really thought about it til a week or so later when my Mum brought it up about the rhyming thing. We are not bothered by it.

keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 19/04/2012 17:27

I think those names are fine together! Grin

abbypumpkin · 19/04/2012 17:45

I don't think it's a problem at all. Plenty of people name dc's after themselves or family members. We have chosen a name for dd2 that is quite similar to dd1. It wasn't deliberate, it just so happens that's the only name oh and I both love. We don't think it's an issue. Although sisters they're individual people and will be referred to as such (not as part of a pair)

MrsLettuce · 19/04/2012 17:53

Lucius is great. You are aware of Lucius Malfoy? Not that it matters a jot, just best to be sure.

LittlePandaBear · 20/04/2012 17:50

Does nobody else want to ask if DP is THE Darius from Pop Idol fame? Blush

RnB · 20/04/2012 18:38

Ah Lucia is gorgeous

Yes my son told me about Lucius Malfoy! He didn't seem to mind Smile

Not that Darius unfortunately Wink

Mrsmonkfish · 20/04/2012 19:10

Darius and Lucius DO NOT RHYME!!! and they are both gorgeous names!! Words that almost rhyme are called "slant rhymes" (apparently) You go for it!! My friend Bill has a daughter called Jill. Not only has no -one ever commented, I don't even think anyone has noticed!

fondantfancier · 20/04/2012 19:25

I know a Mum Louise and a son Lewis and don't really think much of it TBH, if you like the name, use it anyway.

Surf25 · 20/04/2012 19:52

Go for it - I see no problem at all and agree that they don't really rhyme as much as have the same rhythm/number of syllables and end in the same sound, iyswim?

Liking Lucius!
