Help me name DS!

DS 4 days old and none of our name ideas are sticking...

DD is Audrey and if DS had been a girl probably would have been Charlotte.

DP is Scottish so something Scottish/Celtic would be good but not essential.

We did like Irvine but decided it didn't suit him in the end. Also considered Hugh (bit posh sounding for me), Fergus (like but not entirely sold on), James/Jimmy (I would have as mn potentially).

He is a quiet baby with v dark eyes who never kicked in the womb but swished around like a fish.

What do you reckon? I feel as though the longer it goes on the harder it will get - hoping one of you lovely mners can come up with the perfect solution!

I was going to say Rory, but it doesn't go very well with Audrey. How about Hugo?

Stellan · 19/04/2012 15:02

Alistair?

tummytickler · 19/04/2012 15:02

Sholto, Cormac, Struan, Monty, Hamish, Conrad, Michael, Victor, Xavier, Clarence?

Hamish?

Ooh thanks everyone. You would have thought that we had been through all these the amount of time we've spent perusing name lists on tinternet recently but some we hadnt and its made me think about others we'd discarded again.

Anyway, I like a lot of them but think Rory might be it - had considered Ruairidh, which I liked, but decided spelling too much of an issue, but had kind of skimmed over Rory. Apart from a slight reservation about the way it triggers "...the racing car" whenever I think it, I really like it and think it suits DS. I know what you mean nizlopi - two 'oar' sounding names not great but it doesnt bother me much and I think they go together fine apart from that.

You have truly performed a service - thanks!

Rory is an excellent name, its my sons name ;) he does have one little boy at school who calls him 'Roary the Racing Car', but the little boy in question is called Harry, so he gets called 'Harry Potter' right back.

Audrey and Fergus
Audrey and Fraser

I too think that Audrey and Rory sound a little too similar.

JollySergeantJackrum · 19/04/2012 22:21

DS is Harris.

We like Ramsay for (fictional) no. 2.

BellaOfTheBalls · 19/04/2012 22:30

Fraser.

DP has Scottish dad and a very Scottish surname. I petitioned Fraser for ages but got nowhere. It's lovely. I also love Struan.

Ruaridh is actually pronounced Roo-ray...

BBQJuly · 20/04/2012 00:02

Rory is very nice. I don't suppose the racing car thing will last too many years - people grow out of watching it or the programme is dropped.

James is nice too. Why not James as first name? It's a bit of a default middle name as it "goes with anything" but not so used as a first name.

ohwhatever · 20/04/2012 06:02

jolly Ramsay was on our shortlist before he was born but another one where it just really doesnt seem to suit him.

I quite like Fraser/Frazer but DP was against.

Pronunciation was another reason not to go with Ruairidh! I would have had to just copy how they say it on the Archers, being the only place I've come across it and I'd always be worried I was saying it wrong!

I just know too many James to have it as a first name but its well used in ny Dad's family and is a good safe alternative to use if you hate your first name so works well for mn I think.

Another vote here for Struan. It means stream, so thought of it immediately when you described your son.
