A girl! DH stumped. Help please.

So it looks like we're expecting a little girl! We had boys' names sorted, but girls' names have always stumped DH.

i like simple, non-nicknamey names like Jane, Rose, Mary, Lucy, Anna, Helen, and so on.

but he has a random negative association with each and every one of them plus anything else i suggest. Beatrice is frilly; Elizabeth is boring; he once had a goldfish called Charlotte; Catherine is the name of an annoying relative; no-one can pronounce Corinne or Coralie; and so we carry on.

i think he is so bored by girls' names that he says no to all of them out of annoyance... but then he just has to hear more, so not sure why he does that!

So here are the only names he has not vetoed:
Annabelle
Annabel (? which spelling is better?)
Madeleine (side note: he had absolutely vetoed this previously but now seems to think that never happened)

More suggestions?
Comments on v short list?
We have a highly unusual surname so nothing too outlandish will be accepted as a given name. He loves Vincent for a boy.

All the names I would have suggested have been said, but I just had to post cause I've had an awful day and the line ''he once had a goldfish called Charlotte'' actually made me laugh out loud. I have no idea why, but it cheered me right up. So thanks and good luck :)

Ps - Alice is a great name

oikopolis · 19/04/2012 18:54

Polka you made me smile with your message :) i hope your day gets better.

and i also love Alice! thanks for the reminder.

currently making up a fresh list (with strategically-placed faves peppered throughout - thanks BillyBollyBandy) based on this thread.

said to him last night "we need to go over girls' names"
DH: "but i don't CARE about names, they all sound the SAME"
oik: "well do you mean i can name her whatever i please then?"
DH: "no, all the names you like are weird!!"
oik:

LOL

I love Alice too, it's top of the list for our next wee one. We'd spell it Alys, the welsh way Smile

I like a lot of the names mentioned on here like

Louise
Grace
Iris
Eleanor

And Freya is growing on me. Though I don't know any child called that.

Staverton · 19/04/2012 19:42

Josie
Tessa
Mary
Nina
Nancy

What were your boys names? We are really struggling with those....

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 19/04/2012 19:52

A bit anal I know Grin but I went through baby name books and listed them all in a spreadsheet then deleted the ones already used by friends or family or that I didn't like and then let DH delete the ones he didn't like....

Then we had our short list Wink but when DS was born I forgot to -pack- throw it a the hospital bag (didn't pack till I went in 3 weeks earlyGrin)

Sat in the delivery room trying to decide and all I could remember was the first name on the list (was sorted alphabetically) was Adam....

So I have an Adam and then for DD we were a bit more organised Wink

Don't know if something similar might help...

ceeveebee · 19/04/2012 20:01

We have an Eliza which is classic and not easily shortened..

BillyBollyBandy · 19/04/2012 20:05

See Oik they are impossible! My DH would say something along the same lines

oikopolis · 19/04/2012 20:30

Maryz I wish to God I could tell you he actively likes other boys' names. Our joint list for a boy consisted of:

Vincent (which he loves, as i said) and
Dominic (which I love, and he accepts is useable).

Honestly, I went through HUNDREDS of names with him. It was ridiculous. he "hated" every. single. girls'. name. Except Annabel, and now Madeleine apparently.

putthehamsterback what you describe is basically what i'm doing this time around. i won't have our girl named something that he will later grumble about!

Billy i completely agree, he is usually such an amenable man but oyyyy, anything to do with names and he just glazes over.

If he is so tuned out about girls' names, to the extent of directly contradicting himself in the course of one short conversation about his preferences, I bet you could pick a name and say nothing about it until she arrives, and tell him he agreed to it weeks previously.

14UnitsMyArse · 19/04/2012 20:59

My name is Josephine my dd is Isabelle both ate great names I'm not biased Grin

Pandygirl · 19/04/2012 21:04

Victoria, Eleanor, Isabella, Juliette?

oikopolis · 19/04/2012 21:08

math he vetoed Madeleine some months ago actually (quite vociferously iirc). then last week i mentioned a friend had suggested it to me, and that it was a shame he didn't like it, and he looked at me like i had 2 heads and said "but that's a nice name, why wouldn't i like it!"

Confused

i think i will run a list past him one last time this week. and if that doesn't work, i will give up and name the poor gel myself :)
i think now that there is an ACTUAL little girl in the picture, i might get some actual opinions out of him. i would like to attempt that at least...
