Shortened to Ben. Thoughts? Any welcome!

Seriously? Or are you trying to have a laugh with your arcane knowledge of sex aids? Cos I've used them heard of them, y'know. Wink.
Have only seen it written Benwa, but an English person will say it like that, usually.

Bellaholland · 18/04/2012 10:15

That's a bit harsh! Benoit is a popular French boys name! I work in an international school and know several. The spelling is not Benwa!

Do you live in France? Or are you French?

As long as you are ok with the fact that many people (me!) will not know the correct pronunciation and you, and subsequently your son, will spend your whole lives having to spell it and correct how people say it. Maybe too much of a rod for your own back? And it absolutely wouldn't be fair to get grumpy about it! Wink

How about Louis as the first name? He'll still get called Lewis but maybe not quite as often as he'll be called Ben-oi!-t.

belgo · 18/04/2012 10:29

Prefer Benjamin Louis.

Bellaholland · 18/04/2012 10:36

We live in holland. My English family ate use to different names and learning how to pronounce them. My husbands family have some very difficult names to pronounce.

To add... We like just Ben but I would prefer a longer name on birth certificate. I don't like Benjamin!

I like Benoit, but have to agree with AwesomeWellies - it makes me think of Ben-Wa balls!

belgo · 18/04/2012 10:45

If you call him Ben, then english speaking people will assume that he is Benjamin.

Fraktal · 18/04/2012 10:45

I wouldn't put Louis as a middle name but I do like Benoit. However we rejected it because it would become BenOIt

duchesse · 18/04/2012 10:59

Benoit is in fact the French version of Benedict. My son calls himself Benoit in France because Benedicte is only for girls in France. Lovely name, obviously.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 18/04/2012 11:35

Benoit is gorgeous. As is Louis.

WatneyShed · 18/04/2012 11:41

I quite like it. It does remind me of Crossroads, but that's of no concern.

Is it meant to have a hat over the 'o' or the 'i' though ?

ripsishere · 18/04/2012 11:44

Benedict is much nicer.

BaronessBomburst · 18/04/2012 11:46

I live in Holland too. It'll be fine and is a very nice name. The Dutch can cope with anything name-wise. In England he can just be Ben.

Are you planning on moving back, or did you just want something which worked in both countries?

HollyGoHeavily · 18/04/2012 11:49

I much prefer Benedict....

.... with the disclaimer that a friend of mine named benedict was called Bendy Dick for his entire school career.....

Bue · 19/04/2012 18:05

This was my high school French teacher's son's name. He was a very cute kid and ever since meeting him I've loved the name. It's very elegant, imo.
