Hypothetical names

We're only at the beginning of TTC but DH and I are arguing about names already.

DS is Mark Alexander

Future DS could be:

Victor Octavian
Valerian Bartholomew
Cyriaque Valère

Future DD could be:

Constantine Iphigenie
Louise Emerence
Eurydice Frances

I am not telling which names are DH and which are mine Wink

Thoughts? Opinions? Court orders preventing us from reproducing again?

Victor Octavian is a fab name. Sorry I couldn't even begin with how to prenounce Cyriaque or Iphigenie!

Fraktal · 17/04/2012 19:58

Sear-ee-ack and Ee-fi-jen-ee (both French names so imagine a French accent!)

Are you in the UK, Fraktal? If so you may well encounter spelling and pronunciation difficulties with some of your choices - Cyriaque and Eurydice, in particular.

Valerian immediately brings to mind the drug of the same name and spelling to treat various mental health conditions. Constantine, I think of being a boys name due to the Roman Emperor. What about Constantina, Constantia or Constance?

From your list, I prefer Victor (with Bartholomew as a mn - softer against the hard c and t of Victor which Octavian also has, ifyswim) and Louise (Frances or Emerence as mns), but really my opinion doesn't count Grin

Tbh I think they are a bit 'much' especially compared to your ds' name which is just solid and sensible.

I like Victor and I love Bartholomew. Louise is nice but the rest of your girls' names are over fussy imho.

sonniboo · 17/04/2012 21:25

Love Victor and Octavian. Cyriaque sounds nice in French but may be tricky for many English. How about Cyrus or Cyril instead?

Girls' names are all gorgeous although the Iphigenie may well be tricky in England.

PuppyMonkey · 17/04/2012 21:27

They're all very silly names.

sonniboo · 17/04/2012 21:29

Why 'silly'? Just because they're not that commonly used in the UK?

DialMforMummy · 17/04/2012 21:31

I am sorry but they are all very try hard in IMHO, even in French. The only tolerable ones would be the Victor and Louise combos.

rachel234 · 17/04/2012 21:35

I like Victor, Bartholomew and Cyril/Cyrus as well as Frances, Louise and Constantine.

In Germany Konstantin is a very popular boys' name at the moment (pronounced the same as Constantine in French).

tummytickler · 17/04/2012 21:37

I love Victor, Octavian Eurydice, Louise and Frances! Lovely!

Fraktal · 18/04/2012 06:25

Thanks for the opinions. It seems we need to reign in our imaginations a bit!

No we're not UK (I use MN as my UK barometer Grin) so whilst Constantine is the perfectly acceptable French female form it probably has the same issues as Benedicte and Frederique for the UK. Shame. Constance would be tricky which our surname and Constantina doesn't work so well in French. We discounted Catarina for the same reason.

I know Iphigenie at least would be tough for anglophones hence using it as a middle name, but all the middle names have a family connection.

There is an alternative spelling of Valerien, would that have the same issues?

remus in a way I regret DS's sensible name, I was too scared to use Valerian or any of other other then front runners.

rachel234 · 18/04/2012 08:27

I think Valerien would be lovely for a boy.

DogEared · 18/04/2012 08:56

Mark Alexander is a wonderful name!
I like Louise and Victor from your list. I think the rest sound like people from Made in Chelsea. Sorry.

manicinsomniac · 18/04/2012 21:39

mmm, think they sound a bit OTT for England. I don't know anything about France though.

Victor and Louise are sensible. Not to my taste but I would choose those two from your list.

BBQJuly · 18/04/2012 21:46

I'd use the most ordinary sounding names of the bunch.

Victor Bartholomew

Louise Frances

... and there you have two lovely sensible names, not overused, but perfectly recognisable and pronouncable :)

helebeth · 19/04/2012 16:31

The important thing is if you like the name. After all it is your choice. The world is getting smaller and there are names from lots of different nationalities in all countries. I expect that other nations cringe at some of the British names. Be confident in your name choice. If you like it that is all that matters.
