I can't think of any
Closest I can get is Cerdwen which means fair poetess I think

FondleWithCare · 17/04/2012 10:32

Carys (Matthews)?

BBQJuly · 17/04/2012 10:53

Cecilia

St Cecilia was the patron saint of music.

www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Cecilia

"The name came from the Welsh name Seissylt meaning "sixth". It was later used as an English form of Latin name Caecilia, feminine of Caecilius (see Cecil)."

DogEared · 17/04/2012 10:58

Awen (means inspiration and is a relatively common name)
Alaw means music and is a well-known girls name.

DogEared · 17/04/2012 10:59

Cerys Matthews is a Cerys not a Carys.

I never knew Cecilia had Welsh roots... It's certainly not seen or used as a Welsh name.

Isolde

www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Isolde

Isolde \i-sol-de, is(o)-lde\ as a girl's name. Possibly (Welsh) "fair lady". In legend, Isolde is an Irish princess made famous by Wagner's opera "Tristan and Isolde".

BBQJuly · 17/04/2012 11:01

Linnet

www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Linnet

Linnet \l(in)-
net\ as a girl's name is a variant of Linette (Welsh, Old French) and Lynette (Welsh), and the meaning of Linnet is "idol; linnet, a small songbird; nymph; idol".

DogEared · 17/04/2012 11:05

BBQ I've just looked at that site and I'm afraid it's utter bollocks! Esyllt is Welsh for Isolde, and Eluned or Luned would be Linnet. Sorry! :) I've found a lot of Welsh baby name sites that are either completely made up or someone has flicked through a dictionary choosing pretty sounds but not looking at the meaning (one example off an American site- Girls' name- Artaith- means torture :o

BBQJuly · 17/04/2012 12:04

Oh dear, so sorry! Good luck OP in finding something suitable :)

doctordwt · 17/04/2012 12:44

Llinos means linnet. A fairly popular name if you're in Wales - if not, pronunciation nightmare.

Every baby name website I've ever looked at has been absolute linguistic guff surrounded by glitter and fluffy wuffy baby pictures... get a proper baby name book everyone!

DogEared · 17/04/2012 12:59

I am Blush that I didn't know Llinos meant Linnet, doctordwt...

BBQJuly · 17/04/2012 14:06

I've seen mistakes and over-simplifications in some books as well unfortunately! Any specific books you'd recommend doctordwt?

bronze · 17/04/2012 14:16

I have a book of welsh baby names somewhere if I only knew where. Very wary of sites when they claim Branwyn blodwyn and Bronwyn are proper welsh names

DogEared · 17/04/2012 14:27

This is the absolute best book for Welsh names- It's compiled by a Welshman, published by a Welsh publisher, and is bilingual. It's the only one I know that Welsh speakers use!

mejon · 17/04/2012 14:36

Agree with DogEared about the book and the dodgy name websites Grin. I also used this book but the Heini Gruffudd one is 'simpler' as the boys and girls names are in different colours just in case you get confused!

junemami · 17/04/2012 18:48

Hi
Love Delun which means "fair one" but pronounced the same as Delyn which is welsh for Harp. Others: Deryn (bird), Gwenlais (literal trans = white voice). Carol (not strictly welsh but popular in Wales).

Welsh musicians - Catrin (Finch) Shan (Cothi), Marina (and the Diamonds), Katherine (Jenkins), Mary (Hopkin) and Shirley (Dame, should need no explanation!). Probably lots more I can't think of now.

I have the Heini Griffiths book that DogEared recommended and would second that.
Bronze - what's wrong with Blodwyn/wen and Branwyn as welsh names? (though think better ending in -wen)?

HTH
:)

bronze · 17/04/2012 18:51

Nothing wrong with a wen

bronze · 17/04/2012 18:54

Sorry I meant for girls names wyn being masculine

SoupDragon · 17/04/2012 18:54

How about Seren, meaning star... next stop X Factor!

DogEared · 17/04/2012 20:36

Deryn? People actually call their children Deryn?!

(I know about Dic Deryn, of course. but he's a one-off.) :o

LittleEsmeWeatherwax · 17/04/2012 20:40

I second Alaw.
Welsh for melody.
I know an Alaw and she is lovely. Grin

junemami · 17/04/2012 20:51

Must admit not a massive fan of Deryn, but no worse than Seren IMO (run of Serens round here lately). Bronze - thanks, see what you mean now, was being a bit thick Blush

Petrean · 17/04/2012 20:52

Manon

freerangeeggs · 17/04/2012 21:01

What's wrong with Seren, junemami? I'm not Welsh but I've always thought it was a cool name.

DogEared · 17/04/2012 21:03

Seren is nice but they're everywhere now.
Manon is a good suggestion, what with the opera and all...
