...am I missing out on another lovely name? I've got it down to these two, and would love opinions on them! I'm changing my name not namin a baby, and was born before HP fortunately! Thoughts, suggestions for middles? What type of girl/woman would wear these names? Will probably have either Flora or Rose as one of them.

Thanks!

They're both lovely names :) I think I'd rather be a Hermione than a Beatrice, as Beatrice sounds very traditional. Not sure about a nickname for Hermione, but I like Bea for Beatrice.

You've got a film character and a princess there. Which do you feel like?
Or if neither, what about Ianthe, Athene or Athena, Alexandrina, ?

I think Rose goes with both, Flora with Hermione. But they're both nice names.

Thanks for the replies! I suppose my only reservations about each are that, while I do not know of any old ladies named Beatrice, it is a bit stodgy. The nicknames aren't obvious for Hermione which I don't mind that much but is it too frilly? I have an aversion to frilly monikers like Seraphina, for example.

Both nice names. Beatrice more popular, Hermione has the obvious Potter connotations.

Beatrice Rose is lovely.

Blanche?

Both are lovely but Hermione has the edge for me. Really pretty and that bit more unusual than Beatrice (though neither is exactly popular).

The Harry Potter thing hasn't put tens of thousands of people off naming their child Harry. I doubt many people would make more than a fleeting connection and it will all be different in ten years anyway. A name is for life after all.

A name is for life after all

Obviously not in EmilyRoo's case :o

Beamur · 17/04/2012 12:39

Both lovely, elegant feminine names - but I have a preference for Beatrice. It is becoming a more popular girls name at the moment.
The Potter connection will probably mean more people will know how to spell Hermione too now.
I wouldn't consider either name stodgy - but they both have a solid traditional feel to them.

The other names I really like are Alice, Charlotte and Florence. Other than Hermione I'm not really a fan of Greek names! I like how both Beatrice and Hermione have that sort of English feel (not just because of Shakeapeare, DH Lawrence and that sort of thing). Thanks for your responses!

Hermione has the edge at the moment!

I'm sadly not a fan of either. Beatrice is a bit uptight, Hermione doesn't sound nice to me. Reminds me of "wormy".

My suggestions are:

Constance
Christina
Lydia
Lillian

So I've been thinking and I'm leaning toward Beatrice (one of the main characters in the novel I'm reading Shake Down the Stars by Frances Donnelly is Beatrice nicknamed Beattie, may be influencing me a bit) but I'm worried it is a) slightly blah and b) would it pin me down to a certain class/background? I'm a firm believer that the person wears the name etc but on a resume for example when there is only the name to go on...

Also middle name ideas for Beatrice/Hermione that would go with Rose (and are much more interesting-Rose is after my grandmother otherwise I'd change it)?

Beatrice was the woman who inspired Dante to write the Divine Comedy - hardly blah Grin

Beatrice is lovely and I adore the nn Bea.

What about
Penelope
Cordelia
Arianna
Tabitha nn Bitsy Smile
Cecilia nn Cece

livismum · 18/04/2012 23:33

I like both! Sorry not helping! Both were on shortlist for daughters!

I have a very boring name so made sure I gave my daughters names I would love myself and ones that (hopefully) will grow with them,

Olivia Grace
Eleanor Bree

Others I like

Amelia Rose
Madeline
Harriet

Both of your choices lovely, I'd love to be called either! Grin
