Thoughts on Tommy?

We're looking for names to go with Alfred, Dexter and Henry and now we're drifting towards Thomas for a boy, nn Tommy. What are your thoughts? I know it's very popular but do most people go for the nn Tom? Obviously having a Harry we aren't too bothered about popularity (although he could be more widely known as Henry if he wanted) but I still want the name to have a more interesting edge.

My brothers are Thomas and Henry. Thomas is usually known as 'Tom' but Tommy is a nice nn just as long as everyone knows from the outset he is a Tommy. They are lovely names that go together well AND everyone can spell them!

It's cute but I really dislike Thomas. Sorry not much help!

MagsAloof · 16/04/2012 14:28

Thomas is so, so popular and has been for years. To me, it is a 'meh' name, but if you like it, go for it.

InNeedOfNewClothes · 16/04/2012 15:23

I like it, the only thing that can be said against it is that it is very popular. But if it being very popular doesn't put you off then I'd go for it.

Tommy is a lovely name. Not so keen on Thomas, personally.

I love Thomas - not so sure about Tommy Confused

fanjodisfunction · 16/04/2012 16:47

I know a Thomas who was called Tommy for most of his young life and now he's 18 he gets called Tom by his mates but he's still Tommy to his family.
I like the name, its a classic that's why its always popular.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 16/04/2012 17:48

I really like Tommy. Very cute. Not that keen on Thomas, mainly because it is so popular. Tom is lovely too.

MrsJohnDeere · 16/04/2012 18:06

I have a Thomas. He suits it. It's a classic but lovely name and will grow with him as he gets older. Also he's the only one at his nursery so not that popular. I only know 1 other baby Thomas.

nooka · 17/04/2012 02:35

I prefer Johny (for Jonathon or John) which I think would be less popular. Thomas is a nice name, I know one or two that prefer the full name, but the majority are Toms. I don't know anyone that has opted for Tommy, except Tommy Walsh from Groundforce, so that's who the name brings to my mind.

lovechoc · 17/04/2012 07:56

Tommy a lot nicer than Tom IMO. Tom is a bit run-of-the-mill.

PleaseChooseAnotherNN · 17/04/2012 08:01

Lovely name, although I am bias as our bump is a Thomas. I am hoping he doesn't get Tommy though as I'm not too keen on that. I also have a Daniel whom I refuse to let anyone call Danny. Tom and Dan are fine though.

Jess850 · 17/04/2012 11:37

Classic name Thomas and Tommy/Tom are great - go well with Your other names too.

flipflopper · 17/04/2012 12:37

I am not keen on Thomas as a name, or Tommy as a nn. Tom quite nice though.
What about Edward? That would go with your older boy's names.
