Dh dismissed Hugo as too posh but thinks Hugh is ok. My main worry is what is he's fat (I am) and is known as Huge Hugh. Am I being ridiculous?

I don't think it's very likely :)

I know a baby called Hugh & a Spanish friend pronounces it Hug. I love that (& so does his Mum)

It seems a strange and unnecessary thing to worry about.

I would never think of Huge!
I know a teenage lad called Hugh and would never think that if he was on the chunky side!

I have a Hugh, he was known as Hugmungus as a baby, but is now a skinny 6YO.

He does often get called Q or shoe by little people.

I have a Hugo (we're not posh) and it really suits him. It's also a name people know but is not that common, same as Hugh really.

never been a problem for the hugh i know, though he is now quite skinny. i think its a fab name - as dizzy says its well know, not that common and like your husband says its better than hugo as not so posh/hurray henry ish. the hugh i know loves his name.

We have a Hugh, he did get called Huge as a baby, mostly because he was! He's now 5 and loved learning to write it as it's Hug with an extra H on the end.

We tend to call him Shugs or Shuggy at home but it's always Hugh at school, although as someone above said it it very difficult for other small children to say and he gets Q or Shoe until they've heard it a few times.

Hugh sounds unfinished to me, but that is probably because DS1 has a good friend called Hugo so I'm used to hearing that.

I agree that Hugh is much nicer name than Hugo but I'm afraid I think it's very likely that a fat Hugh would be known as Huge - even if just behind his back. I guess the other MNers that have replied so far haven't considered how cruel some people can be. Sorry.

Love Hugh, and Huey is supercool, mostly because of Huey Morgan!

Nah, it's a good name.

I teach a Hugh and he is huge (height) (or I am a short arse!) and he is delightful, well spoken, lovely. I call him Huge and no-one bats an eyelid. I also have a couple of Hugo's and they're brilliant too. Both are fab names and don't fret now - kids will get nicknames whatever and if they've got a fab loving mum they'll be fine.
