so with 10 weeks to go and months of endless searching, the only boy's name i love this time is Luca and DH thinks it's a nice name but says we can't use it coz we're not italian. i really love it and think it goes well with our surname and with DS's name, Noah, and can't find a single name i like nearly as much. from this website and the English top 100 names (it's no.70) it seems that it's a perfectly acceptable name in the UK but am wondering what irish mums think.

is it too italian? a bit pretentious? would he get bullied? i know my parents generation would think it's a bit out there (they did with Noah) but would love to know what others my age think.

I'm Irish and have a Sofia [shrugs] Grin, I think its lovely, I really wouldn't worry about what other people think. Someone mentioned that the way I spelt Sofia was pretentious but I really couldn't give 2 shiney shites.

He wouldn't get bullied for his name, it sounds lovely with Noah (which was my boys name for dd3 Grin) but most importantly you love it.

Happyasapiginshite · 11/04/2012 21:51

I know one family with a Luca and the dad is Italian, and another where the mam is French and they lived in Spain when he was born, but I think it's a lovely name for any country. Go for it.

AnEcumenicalMatter · 11/04/2012 22:01

I'm Irish and Luca is high on my list too although I too worry slightly about having no Italian connection but I don't think it's pretentious or that he'd be bullied for it. Then again, one of my other frontrunners is Russian and I have no russian connection either apart from a love of Black Russian cocktails with a Guinness head

skippy84 · 11/04/2012 22:04

Also Irish, thinks its nice, not pretentious and wouldn't worry about the lack if an Italian connectin

stleger · 11/04/2012 22:05

Luka Bloom is Christy Moore's brother if that helps?

squoosh · 12/04/2012 11:00

My friend had a Luca paired with very Irish surname. Something along the lines of Luca Murphy. I was a bit Hmm

Having said that I've heard of a few Irish Luca's being born so it's definitely getting more common. I still prefer Luke.

Stellan · 12/04/2012 13:16

Not Irish so take this with a pinch of salt - but what about Lucan? Apparently it is Irish: nameberry.com/babyname/Lucan

Don't take my word for it though - ask someone who can verify it for you!

babyblabber · 12/04/2012 16:31

Stellan, Lucan is a place, a suburb in Dublin so not a name I would give a baby!

Thanks though, worth a shot!

glad Luca gets good reviews, now i have to convince DH!

Grin @ Lucan!
Although I shouldn't really laugh, I asked about the possibility of having Bosco as a name for DC3...
I love Luca! Go for it OP.

squoosh · 12/04/2012 16:53

It's the Bosco lady! Do you still love Bosco?

woopsidaisy · 12/04/2012 16:58

Yes!

But I accept that I will be sectioned if I choose this name...plus suspect DS3 may actually be a DD1!

Have just started a new thread asking about Mo/Moe though....am I insane?

squoosh · 12/04/2012 17:03

I know an Irish baby Mo!

TBH you could say you wanted to call your child Nebuchadnezzar and I'd think it was great. Anything to steer you off Bosco Grin

woopsidaisy · 12/04/2012 17:16
Grin

I shall just have to accept that my tastes are to ...em...artistic for the everyday person.

Glad that Mo is a possibility though!

Clicketyclack · 12/04/2012 22:43

You do know who is from Lucan dont youwww.planetjedward.net/gallery.php

somewherewest · 13/04/2012 15:59

Mo just reminds me of Mo in The Simpsons (not good).

FuckedOfftotheFarSideofFuck · 13/04/2012 16:03

I like Luca too and wouldn't worry about no Italian connection.

I know a few Irish-with-no-Italian-connection Francescas, some with very Irish surnames and quite like the pairing.

Muckamuck · 13/04/2012 16:09

I know an Irish Luca with a DB called Mika.

I like both.

chipmonkey · 13/04/2012 16:53

I have heard a couple of Luca's being called in play centres. Didn't bat an eyelid!

squoosh · 13/04/2012 16:59

I know an Irish Dmitri without any Greek/Cypriot connections. Now that I find odd.

babyblabber · 13/04/2012 17:03

so delighted with all the positive feedback, yay!

woopsidaisy, i know a little girl called Mo. she's a little dote!

mathanxiety · 13/04/2012 22:33

Luca is lovely and I wouldn't bat an eyelid at it even without Italian connections. I knew an Eduardo, Andre, and Marco growing up many years ago and only the Marco had Italian connections. Also knew a fair few people with Italian ancestors who either owned chippers or were engaged in the ecclesiastical carving trade whose names were Connor, Seamus, etc. Plus, it seems to always have been perfectly fine to give Irish girls Italian, French, Russian, etc. names. (Anna, Maria, Bernadette, Anastasia, etc.)

chipmonkey · 15/04/2012 00:00

I suppose if you live on the second floor of an apartment block, it might be a bit risky as a name?
