Rhyming names - that's a big no-no right?

I've namechanged so not to out myself.

So we have a dd called Constance who is nearly always called Connie.

I'm pg and we are trying to work out names. Our favourite if we had a boy is Jonathan.

Constance and Jonathan - lovely.

Except...

Jonny and Connie - that is wrong isn't it? Will it be a lifetime of embarrassment in parks? Will they be known as the Onnys?

It's OK in India.

HettyKett · 11/04/2012 11:21

Yes, your right, Jonny and Connie is, well, daft.

Why not just use one of the other NNs for Jonathan?

DawnOfTheDee · 11/04/2012 11:22

Nah - I don't think it's a problem. Shorten Jonathan to John instead of Johnny. Even if he does get called Johnny...so what? It's a lovely name and your favourite!

CherryBlossom27 · 11/04/2012 11:23

If you like the name go for it! I'd avoid using Johnny as a nn though.

gingermcflea · 11/04/2012 11:23

Naff.

But Connie and Jonty would be fine.

HettyKett · 11/04/2012 11:25

Yes, you can easily get away with Jonty as a NN for Jonathan. Go for it.

anonymousme · 11/04/2012 12:08

I don't like Jonty as a nn - too posh!

And don't want Jon/John as FIL is called John.

So really it would be Jonathan or Jonny/Johnny

If he was called Jonathan, why would you shorten it to Johnnie it sounds kind of stupid, what about Jo, nathan

mirrorsaysNO · 11/04/2012 21:16

Yes - Nathan or Nat?

BBQJuly · 12/04/2012 00:51

I think the rhyming thing could be a problem, yes.

How about

James/Jamie
Sebastian/Seb
Nathaniel/Nate
Jacob/Jake
Alexander/Alex

Clary · 12/04/2012 00:55

Hmm yes I think you need to avoid Arthur and Martha.

This isn't as bad tho. Couldn't you resist Johnny as a nickname (I would anyway for other reasons!) and go for Jon?

Clary · 12/04/2012 00:56

Sorry I see you already repudiated Jon.

Well you know what Johnny means, right? Hmmm I'm out of ideas. Just call him Jonathan.

randomimposter · 12/04/2012 08:30

shame as lovely names in own right. But yes i do think it's not quite right. A friend of a friend has a Honey and a Sonny. This made me giggle.

CecilyP · 12/04/2012 10:12

I have known several Jonathans who were just called Jonathan within their families. When they went into outside world, they were known as Jon to their friends; so the Jonnie and Connie thing need never arise. Also knew a Jonathan who was called Joe for short.

WestWinger · 12/04/2012 11:32

I know two Jonathans (my preferred boy name if this one turns out to be a boy) and their nicknames are Jot and the other was Jono when he was little.

If calling them together maybe just revert to Jonathan and Connie in those instances..... Or "Oi! You two! Get here now!!" Grin
