What else could Xander be short for?

Love Xander.
Not keen on Alex so wouldn't go for Alexander.

What else could Xander be short for? I would like a long version as well as the NN as I think it sounds too much like a NN on its own.

Currently loving Lysander. Would Xander work as a NN, or is it strange to write it with an X? So would it have to be 'Sander'?

Any other suggestions from you lovely Mumsnetters?

Thanks x

Xandpaper.

Sorry.

I actually think it sounds like a proper name, to be honest. Can't think of any alternatives but hopefully someone a bit less drugged up on dentist anaesthetic can offer something sensible!

I think you get the "x" from the normal UK spelling of Alexander, so it's either a nn for that or a free-standing name.

I don't think it works for Lysander (sorry).

If you love Xander but don't like the nickname Alex, I don't think that should stop you from using Alexander. You just need to make it clear that your son's nickname of choice is Xander: 'This is my son, Alexander; we call him Xander.' Or, even, 'This is Xander.'

Xander doesn't work as a nickname for Lysander. Lysander is a nice name - Sandy is a cute nickname.

I thought that Xander was a name in itself and a derivative of Alexander.

I like Xander as a stand alone name.

thisisyesterday · 10/04/2012 15:44

why don't you just use Xander?

I prefer the Z spelling, Zander. I also love Alexander but dont like Alex.

Go with your instict, your child, your choice

meditrina · 10/04/2012 20:30

Zander with a 'z' is however a type of fish.

Xander can be a stand-alone name or a nickname for Alexander.

I really don't think it is short for anything else, it would be very contrived to try to get Xander from some other name.

I have always loved the name Xander and would use it as a stand alone name but I dont think it goes with my surname which is the last part of my username!!!!

My son is Alexander, known as Xander at home. I have never called him Alex and it would sound weird to me. He is called Alex at school sometimes, but mostly people go with what the parents call the child themselves.

WineOhWhy · 12/04/2012 14:57

I know a boy called Alexander who was always called Xander, but when he turned about 8 he decided he did not like the name (too pretentious or something) and felt very strongly about it. He is now Alex. Hence, although i think it is right that if the parents always use a particular nickname people will generally go with it, I dont think you can guarantee he will never become Alex.
