How much of an issue do you think the initials BJ would be? I like several B names to go with brothers Charles and Wilfred - Bruno and Barnabus in particular but our surname begins with a J and I'm worried that it will leave him open to teasing.
What do you think?

I wonder if the parents of, say, Winston Churchill or Barack Obama were warned off giving their offspring potentially embarrassing initials. :)

DuelingFanjo · 12/04/2012 13:10

my son is BJ (first and middle name). We only ever call him by his first name, never BJ. If he gets teased by idiots who have been raised to be arseholes then I will just encourage him to laugh in their faces.

DuelingFanjo · 12/04/2012 13:12

these conversations always make me wonder why ginger people dare breed. Don't they realise that there's a risk they could be saddling their poor offspring with a lifetime of misery. How very dare they! Wink

nizlopi · 12/04/2012 19:21

Yeah because wanting to avoid my child being bullied is the same as agreeing with eugenics. Bravo.

DuelingFanjo · 12/04/2012 23:18

you'd be better off using your energy to teach your children how to have the self esteem to not give a fuck about stupid bullies and their name-calling imo.

BaronessBomburst · 12/04/2012 23:48

nizlopi - Duellingfanjo's comment was tongue-in-cheek.

pictish · 12/04/2012 23:50

I say nay.

CecilyP · 13/04/2012 10:16

There must be hundreds of thousands of people with these particular initials who have managed to live their lives without embarassment, so I don't see it as a problem. Some of them are even well-known and haven't felt the need to change their names. If he has to have initials sewn on his shorts, or whatever, you could just add the middle initial as well.

I think the initials VD may have been more of a problem because it was an official acronym and there are far fewer names beginning with V. There were 2 boys in my class in primary whose initials were BO at around the time that the soap adverts started using this term and it caused mild amusement - no more. I don't think that abbreviation actually existed at the time these boys were born.

DamselInDisarray · 13/04/2012 10:19

Droves: when I was at school, one of my friends was a Brian-John and everyone (including his parents) shortened it to BJ. When he went to university, he decided to become a Brian.

So long as you don't plan on calling your son BJ, I think you'll be fine.

PercyFilth · 13/04/2012 10:43

Some people have even "chosen" to have these initials. Take Billy Joel for instance, his first name is William and there are of course diminutives that don't start with B.

LesAnimaux · 13/04/2012 10:45

As long as you don't actually call him BJ. Or his sister Baby Bop.

astreetcarnamedknackered · 13/04/2012 13:09

Duelling: listen to johnny cash's boy named sue. Makes your point.

Onlymydogunderstandsme · 13/04/2012 15:55

I am in a similar position that I like lots of names beginning with B but the middle name would begin with a J as that's already decided, we have decided that we just can't do it, wouldn't be fair. We do have the option of adding another middle name if we wanted though whereas with yours it's your surname so you haven't got that option! I would avoid i'm afraid!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 13/04/2012 15:58

My DD was BJ. No one ever, in her 14 years of life, ever commented on it.

Its not like we mix in rarified, over polite circles either.

nemno · 13/04/2012 16:03

My friend is a B and was delighted to marry and take her husband's name, finally leaving her BJ millstone initials behind her.

fivecrazymonkeys · 13/04/2012 16:08

It is not a simple answer! We have a BJ, actually a BJC - only first 2 names are BJ and surname C which is better but not that much! He is now 15 and has mentioned it a few times but laughing - he has broad shoulders and can take it. It hasn't been an issue. I had NOT realised the connotations of BJ at ALL!! When I found out, I tried to add a third forename in between the B and the J but it was too late, he was over a year old and had been baptised.

It will probably get picked up on more than my son's though and it is whether you and he can live with it. Any chance of giving him a double barrelled surname at all?? I LOVE the name Bruno - it was nearly our choice as my son was conceived and lived in Italy for a while! I know how hard it is when you love a name and it has to be THAT name! We went for Luca with our 3rd son - with a surname CLARK, not a great combination, but we love it!

Good luck!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 13/04/2012 17:13

I have only just twigged that I am a BJ too Grin

I therefore feel qualified to state that it dont matter a bit.

Never had a comment on mine either.

Mind you I left behind the worst maiden name you could imagine.

freerangeeggs · 14/04/2012 20:29

I actually know a child whose first name is BJ. BJ Lastname. I kid you not.

SodoffBaldrick · 14/04/2012 20:35

That reminds me - I used to work with an American who was universally known as BJ, actually. Even his email address was [email protected] and as far as I know he never got any grief for it. I'd have thought the whole BJ thing was just as widely known in the US but maybe not... Hmm

EvenBetter · 15/04/2012 12:21

BJ is my initials! (after marriage)
I think it's hilarious, I love it, I used to sign toilet checks in work as my first name, now I sign them BJ :o

However, I don't think it's a good idea to inflict them on a child...

DaSmallPunsMum · 15/04/2012 20:31

oh god don't do it. I know it's ridiculous but it really just sounds like a straight up blowjob. Playground suicide.
