.....but for a girl?
Controversial I know. DH loves the name but I'd rather not use it for a boy as it is just so popular here in Scotland.
I know some feel the name has connotations with the current PM but it's long usage in Scotland as a first name is such that not many would make the political connection.
As for the Cameron Diaz thing.... well.... doubt she will still be news worthy in 10, 15, 20 years time.
Would love some opinions. Currently 35+3 weeks and just cannot seem to decide on a name!

To me it feels a bit like calling a girl Dave or Richard... But I guess people would get used to it. It's just that when she fills in forms for stuff people will think she's a bloke until they've met her.

Love it for a girl. My great aunt was a female Cameron, and she was named after an earlier female Cameron; there seem to have been several of them about (Banffshire c1850-1950). So for me, it's good name for a girl.

AberdeenAngusina · 09/04/2012 22:24

Having said that, most people won't have had a Great Aunt Cameron, and will assume it's a boys name.

bonbonpixie · 09/04/2012 22:25

Hi Aberdeen! Are you actually living in Aberdeen? DH and I are right in the city.

Sorry - love the name but it's a boys name would you call a girl Roger?

TerraNotSoFirma · 09/04/2012 23:25

My DD is called Cameron, We are also in Scotland.

Whilst I was pregnant I met a lady on a bus named Cameron, She was 106 and a half! So obviously it's not always been a 'boys' name.

I was totally enchanted by her and named my little girl after her. She really suits the name.

Janoschi · 09/04/2012 23:32

Cameron Diaz looks female....

MrsAmaretto · 09/04/2012 23:33

Love it. I'm in Scotland too and know a female Kennedy and McKenzie, so wouldn't bat an eyelid at a female Cameron.

SodoffBaldrick · 10/04/2012 02:03

I have a friend with a 10 year DD called Cameron.

It wouldn't be my choice, but it's not weird or strange.

WMDinthekitchen · 10/04/2012 02:45

Have known of a girl named Camryn...

FondleWithCare · 10/04/2012 08:16

I like it for a boy but not for a girl.

FondleWithCare · 10/04/2012 08:17

And Camryn is appalling.

meditrina · 10/04/2012 08:24

I first came across the name in "Rivals", and Jilly Cooper used it on a female character.

I think the US usage as female means it does now count as at least unisex, especially if you are a global type family (IYSWIM); US usage is changing how many names are perceived.

PieMistress · 10/04/2012 08:54

I'd never heard of it on a girl until recently and quite like it. The only down side I guess is people thinking (before meeting her) that she would be male ie/ perhaps on her CV or at school etc. I heard the name Brogan and Brodie both used on girls lately too.

AberdeenAngusina · 10/04/2012 09:22

Hi bonbonpixie! I'm in the Shire. In Victorian times in North -East Scotland the mother's maiden name was unisex; hence girls called Cameron, Innes, Scott, Graham, Bruce etc, and boys called Primrose (!).

My great aunt was named after a relative, but I'm guessing that relative was Cameron because of a mother's maiden name.

Nowadays I think you can still get away with a female Cameron because of Cameron Diaz, but I'd advise against calling a girl Bruce.

Go for it - it's a lovely name, and history is on your side!!

PieMistress · 10/04/2012 11:11

PS - I'm in the Shire too (south)

Stellan · 10/04/2012 11:29

It's not for me and I would automatically think of Cameron as a male but I have been touched by the stories of great female Camerons previous posters have met! If you have a family connection to the name or a similarly lovely tale, why not? I like names imbued with meaning - and that trumps any hesitation I have over Cameron being a boys' name.

On a personal level, I prefer Camilla and Camellia. Cammie is a cute nickname for all 3.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 11/04/2012 17:09

I like it for a girl! Grin

TheEpilator · 11/04/2012 17:21

I like it - reminds me of Dr Cameron on 'House' - she's a she, and although its her surname they all call her Cameron.

TBH being a boys' name might even be a bonus. I always love it when someone is introduced as "Henry" or "Charlie" and people's faces betray their surprise that it isn't a bloke! Other names like Sam and Jo can also sound unisex and plenty of women have managed fine with those names.

Only downside is the political connotations, but lets face it, with the pigs ear he's making of it all, he won't be around for long.

Frontpaw · 11/04/2012 17:23

I just think of David Cameron and want to vomit.

AberdeenAngusina · 11/04/2012 17:51

I think it's such a normal name here, both as a first name and as a surname, that people wouldn't particularly associate it with David Cameron, any more than they'd associate "David" with him. (David Cameron's Cameron ancestry came from Aberdeenshire, but he plays it down, possibly because they weren't ancestors he wants to admit to having had....)

(Piemistress - I'm in the north)
