Middle names with family meaning

I need some help with a middle for a girl. I think middle names should have some meaning or family connection. The only problem is that the females in our family have very dated names like rita, Gladys, Doris, constance Janet etc. Can anyone help with similar or derivatives of those names.

The choice of first names is:
Amelia
Lucy
Jessica
Georgina

Surname begins with d and is one syllable.
But when we get married will begin with p and will be 3 syllables... Thoughts please??

Sorry, I'm not going to be too much help, but I actually love the idea of a proper vintage middle name. War-time names are (apparently) coming back in fashion. I think it much nicer that a middle name means something as it's rarely used anyway.

I'm thinking of middle name Nora (my nan's name) if it's a girl.

I think Doris and Gladys fit very well as middle names to all of those - except perhaps Georgina Gladys (Gigi).

Will you be changing the baby's surname when you get married? Why? Why not use her father's name on the BC (or both keep yours Wink)

I agree it is lovely to use family names for middle names. Are the names you have listed people you are / were close to? dd1 has my first name, Katherine as her middle name. Ds1 has Alexander as his first name just like his dad, grandad, great grandad etc. dd2 has my sister's name, Jennifer as her middle name.

I like Amelia Constance or Lucy Constance from your list.

Janet is related to Jane, so how about Lucy Jane?

SodoffBaldrick · 09/04/2012 09:10

You're joking aren't you?! Those names are all fab! Gladys I perhaps struggle with a tiny bit, but the others are great.

In any case, if they mean something then it's extra special. [busmile]

Thanks for the suggestions-I already have 2dc with my name and dont think it's fair for them if the baby has z different surname to them... So we will all change our surnames at the same time when DP and I get married.

I'm with everyone else! Great names made even greater by the fact they mean something.

My daughter is Alice Margaret after grannies and great grannies!! My niece has Barbara in her name after grandma.

I love that my middle name was my grannies name, it's really special to me!

I also know of 3 baby girls called Constance/Connie [busmile]

Good luck!

babybrain3 · 09/04/2012 09:19

Oooh yes, I like Amelia Doris!!

I agree they are lovely middlenames that will give a real family connection all of my 4 have middlenames that are not in fashion because they are named after people we love/loved. (grandma and mil - sil - bil and grandad)

Maiziemonkey · 09/04/2012 13:40

I agree names from people are special- as I always liked my middle name Alice was from a family friend. We carried on the tradition by giving a friend's name to my son as middle-name - particularly as the said friend always exclaimed that he had never met anyone with his name before.
I love the name Amelia ... Amelia jane ?

lunamoon · 09/04/2012 13:50

What about Connie?

AmziePie · 10/04/2012 00:10

Out of the middle name options i would choose Constance (or Connie) it would go with all of the first names. I love love love the name Jessica

joanofarchitrave · 10/04/2012 00:14

Constance is beautiful. Lucy Constance is an absolutely wonderful name, but it also goes with all the other firsts you list.

Rita might have been short for Margarita? Lucy Margarita is nice.

Sarcalogos · 10/04/2012 13:46

Was doris short for Dorothy?

FondleWithCare · 10/04/2012 13:49

Rita- Marguerite
Doris- Dora, Theodora, Dorothea
Constance- Constanza, Connie, Consuela
Janet- Jeannette, Janna

SLVC · 11/04/2012 22:07

Constance is a fab middle name. Rita is quite cool too and I'm also quite keen on Doris. Go for one of them.

Bue · 12/04/2012 11:24

Embrace the vintage! I know a baby who was recently given the middle name Doreen (after great grandma, I think) alongside a very typically trendy first name. I thought it was charming.

Could you try going further back in the family tree? No one was named Doris and Gladys in the 1800s. You're sure to find some acceptable standards there.

BellaCB · 13/04/2012 12:11

We gave DD middle after her two grandma's, but as DM is Janet I'll admit I changed that to Jane. I'd go with X Constance Jane. But then I'd probably go with Constance as the first name, its gorgeous!

DesperatelySeekingDistraction · 13/04/2012 15:13

My DD's middle name is Winifred after my grandmother. Not the prettiest of middle names but it meant a lot to me and my family to honour such a wonderful woman who my DD unfortunately arrived too late to meet.
