Not Ben, Ned or - er - Dick.

There are no others, are there? :(

Benjy
Ben
I know a Benedict who is 4 and everyone calls him Buddy.

Janoschi · 09/04/2012 22:56

Benedictavious. If it won't shorten, the only way is longer.

SandStorm · 09/04/2012 23:00

People don't have to have nick names. If you like Benedict just stick with the full length version. I would never shorten someone's name if their parents don't.

Also agree that a nn can have nothing to do with the actual name. Both my dds have nns that are completely unassociated with their names.

I know a Benedict who doesn't have a nn if that helps.

organiccarrotcake · 12/04/2012 09:07

Thanks everyone. I do love the name, it just feels a bit of a mouthful for a first name, I guess! But good advice - either use the name, find a NN that works or pick something else!

Back to the drawing board :)

I call mine Benny (or Bennyboy Blush) Grin Also Badger, randomly.
Everyone else calls him Ben/Benedict.

You have excellent taste Wink

duchesse · 12/04/2012 10:17

Have always called ours Bene, although he now goes by Ben. Have never for one second regretted calling him Benedict- it's a lovely name! I am biased of course.

duchesse · 12/04/2012 10:18

PS: some people we know called their Benet, which is a related name and a very good nickname. Wish we'd thought of using that as a nn.

BikeRunSki · 12/04/2012 10:19

I know one nn Benzine.

BikeRunSki · 12/04/2012 10:20

Sorry, that should have been Benzie.

Bluestocking · 12/04/2012 10:29

The only Benedict I know is always called Ben. But why not call him Benedict? My DS has a three-syllable name which we've always used until he decided he wanted to be generally known by the obvious monosyllabic short version. And his family nickname has nothing whatever to do with his given name!

iklboo · 12/04/2012 10:53

I get the feeling Benedict Cumberbatch was probably never a Benny Grin.

organiccarrotcake · 12/04/2012 12:00

LOL I think you're right, iklboo!

So you parents of Benedicts, doesn't it sound really looooong shouted across the playground?

If you like Benedict how about Reuben? We had both on our list until they were used by family / friends. Loved the idea of little Reu and him having choice of Ben when older if he didn't like Reu or Reuben.

Lizzylou · 13/04/2012 08:57

No, and you can make it sound very stern if you need to Smile

I love the name Benedict

organiccarrotcake · 13/04/2012 16:14

LOL Lizzy - yeah - BeneDICT!!!!

Reuben is a great name, but it's the "Ben" part I'm not really wanting,as a NN I mean. Not that I don't like it but it's not appropriate for us for various reasons.

I don't know any other little Benedicts so it's quite nice to hear that there are a few around. And I'm shamelessly in love with Benedict Cumberbatch which had nothing to do with me considering it. At all Grin.

Love Benedict (largely for the meaning) and would use Ned myself as a NN.

organiccarrotcake · 13/04/2012 16:34

Darn it. We were pretty definate that we were going to run with it as a middle name, but now I'm coming back to the idea of it as a first name. I really love it but somehow I still feel it's a bit cumbersome.

What about middle names to go with it then?

Theas18 · 13/04/2012 16:35

Benedict will be Ben when he's a teen what ever you call him I fear, so if you can't stick that find another name..

Diccon is a lovely name though

organiccarrotcake · 13/04/2012 16:39

Do you think? Well I guess he will choose what he prefers, in the end, and yes that might be Ben. Diccon is cute! I like that a lot. Despite me starting this thread my hubs is dead against NNs generally (he says if you want to use a NN, why not just call the child that) but I reckon I could make something stick Grin.

I f you are adament that you don't want him called Ben (or Ned or Benny or Dick) then the only option is not to call him Benedict. You'll nver be able to control what other people call him at school, and other places.

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 13/04/2012 16:42

I know a teenage Benedict whose friends mercilessly refer to him as BendyDick

organiccarrotcake · 13/04/2012 17:54

:( I suppose so.

avocado ouch.
