I mentioned this name on another thread a few days ago, and I just can't get it out of my head. I think it's such a beautiful strong name, but I just can't help but think the connotations with Lady Diana will be too strong. What do you think?

Certainly not objectionable but:

  1. Di is still the nickname of a woman of a certain age. And it sounds like 'die'.
  2. Diane suffers with the same association.
  3. Diana is inextricably linked to Princess Diana.

Dinah is another one to consider. I really like it but I can't help but think it sounds a bit too much like 'diner' sometimes.

There's also Diantha too - maybe a bit too try hard though.

I love it too

I don't see the problem. There are other Dianas apart from the princess. I have a friend Diana and the downside for her is that people are always calling her Diane - much to her annoyance.

Diana is a beautiful name :)

I must admit that I don't like it & to me it sounds dated & I can't get my head round a baby Diana.

However, choosing a name is so so personal & subjective.

makes me think of dirty dianna unfortuntely (great song, but not a great nickname)

BBQJuly · 08/04/2012 20:37

It's a lovely name :)

Frikadellen · 08/04/2012 20:40

its beautiful

DerbysKangaskhan · 08/04/2012 21:46

It is my first name.

Most other people quite like it, it's a perfectly usable name with few problems -- but, with pricks, any name can be fuel for them. With Diana, there are the obvious song connection, the "die"/death issue, and people (particularly teachers...) thinking I have an interest in Roman mythology or bad goddess/princess comments. I have had to tell people not to call me Di, I personally don't like it but I know other Dianas who aren't bothered by it just as I have no issue with being called Diane while it is a bother for others. Do know that in some locations, it is read as Dee-ah-na (which I actually prefer but could never get away with here in the UK, I don't think) if you specifically want a name with only one pronunciation. All in all, it's a pretty easy name even for travelling around with.

Love it

Diana is beautiful,Dinah is cute and different. Who cares about connotations? Both lovely choices.

PercyFilth · 09/04/2012 21:06

There's a whole generation already who don't remember Diana Spencer and have only a vague idea of who she was. And there are lots of other positive associations for Diana. Other glamorous Dianas include Diana Ross, Diana Dors, Diana Rigg, Diana Krall, Diana Vreeland.

I don't find it dated in the way that Diane is. I don't think Diana has ever been 'in' or 'out', so it's timeless. Lovely elegant name. Could even be shortened to Anna if she didn't like it.
