Is there anything else it could be short for? We have an Alexander all ready and are really struggling to even put a boys name on the list this time

El Cid?

BBQJuly · 08/04/2012 08:40

I think everyone will assume Sid is short for Sidney. I don't think it's short for anything else.

Darn, we better be having a girl Smileb

Siddharth
Sidney

Stellan · 08/04/2012 14:35

Sidney or Siddharth?

  1. Call him Sid.
  1. Name him another name you love and call him Sid. As Swistle: Baby Names (swistlebabynames.blogspot.co.uk/) says, 'Many nicknames have nothing to do with a person's actual name, connecting instead to the person's appearance, profession, talents, early childhood personality/antics, fetal shape/size, or to something no one can remember anymore.' There's no reason you can't name him anything you like and then call him Sid. For example, these are my sons Alexander and Robert/Simon/Thomas; we call them Alex and Sid.
  1. Alternatively, give him the middle name Sid and then use that as his nickname. Again, from Swistle: Baby Names: 'The middle name slot is the perfect place for a name you don't want to use as an actual legal first name. And this means you can choose a name you love as the first name, instead of choosing any name that might sound like it could conceivably lead to [Sid].'
  1. Name him something like Samuel Isaac David - S.I.D. - and call him Sid.

Ooh thanks you. Lots of food for thought here Smile

Anyone care to suggest some other names that may strike a note?

Only Sid I've ever known was a lovely Indian who's full name was Siddique ( at least that's wikki's spelling).

He was always Sid and teased something rotten because of the Call Sid British Gas Adverts of the time.

Prunella79 · 08/04/2012 16:54

thinking of names like Sid i think of:
Bob - Robert
Stan - Stanley
Ted - Edward
and also Arthur
all of which i love for being thoroughly down to earth

BeaditAli · 08/04/2012 17:25

I knew a Richard who has been Sid all his life

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 08/04/2012 17:41

Ooh I like Stanley

OP posts:
SoThisisMe · 08/04/2012 17:48

Agree Stanley is lovely.

What about Seth?

Janoschi · 08/04/2012 18:04

Sidoni comes up on a few baby name sites....?

BBQJuly · 08/04/2012 18:11

Sidney and Stanley are both "old man" names which have come back into fashion. Others of a similar "type"...

Edwin
Eric
Frederick
John
Wilbur
Austin
Francis
Albert
Clifford
Leonard
Ernest
Raymond
Jerome
Walter
Victor
Archibald/Archie
Maurice

Or other traditional boys names...

Samuel
William
Jonathan
Benjamin
Daniel
Clement
Lawrence
Thomas
Charles
Luke
Edward
Henry
Peter
Richard
Isaac
George

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 08/04/2012 19:24

I like Seth but I'm Irish and my contingent would insist on calling the poor child 'Set' Grin

Have a question on Raymond, it was on my list last time bit dh vetoed it because our surname starts with P and he felt Ray followed by surname sounded like 'Rape'

I think he is over thinking it, what's the verdict?

OP posts:
LaVolcan · 08/04/2012 21:11

Sidell
Sideris
Sidonius
Sidwell
Syed

Janoschi · 08/04/2012 23:44

Oooh, I do like Sidwell.

The 'rape' issue... depends. Ray Palmer to me is fine. Ray Pellan would sound like Rape Ellen, not so good.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 09/04/2012 09:38

It would be Ray Pattman..

TeddingtonsMarchingBand · 09/04/2012 14:17

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 09/04/2012 14:26

TeddingtonsMarchingBand · 09/04/2012 14:50

Grin I know a lovely Stanley.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 09/04/2012 14:51

He'd be Stan the Man though wouldn't he
