Matilda Florence or India Florence?

as the title suggests really! What is your preferred choice? Our surname is one syllable starting with B, and we have DS Alexander James. DD is due in 2 weeks.... Thanks!

Matilda.

toobreathless · 07/04/2012 23:08

Would Matilda be nicknamed Tilly? There seem to be a fair few Milly/Tillys round here. I like Matilda but overuse of Tilly would put me off.

So probably India Florence.

Matilda I think

only cos otherwise it's 2 place names.
although I am not sure that's necessarily a problem

India is a nice name too

GrimmaTheNome · 07/04/2012 23:11

India Florence looks a bit like you've chosen names by sticking a pin in an atlas.

LineRunner · 07/04/2012 23:13

Tilly Flo B

or Indy Flo B

God help me, I love them both. Smile

welovesausagedogs · 07/04/2012 23:35

I like both, but i think Matilda goes better with your sons name.

kbsydney · 07/04/2012 23:40

haha - that's very funny, sticking pins in an atlas! We nearly came to that! Not too many Milly/Tilly/Mattie's around here - I think more popular in England and we live in Australia. Plus my Grandma was called Milly (Millicent) so that might be the best nickname for her. Thanks to all

India Florence is adorable

tara0202 · 08/04/2012 13:09

I love the name India. It's lovely and far less used than Matilda.

justhayley · 08/04/2012 14:23

India is one of my favourite names and Florence is one of my favourite places - ur daughter will grow up to be a beautiful travelling backpacker Grin. I can see why some would think it's about to country as it were but I like it. Not keen on Matilda maybe you could do India Tilly Grin

LeeCoakley · 08/04/2012 14:33

India Florence doesn't sound right to me. It's one 'newish' trendy name and one 'old-fashioned' trendy name. Go with Matilda Florence if you don't have anything else. To me, better first names would start with a vowel but more traditional like Isabelle or Anna.

BBQJuly · 08/04/2012 14:34

India is the better of the two (Matilda and Tilly are getting pretty tired now). However it does remind me of India Knight (not a fan I'm afraid). How about Indira or Miranda as pretty alternatives?

PuffPants · 08/04/2012 14:35

I think it's a bit weird to name a child after a whole country.

kbsydney · 09/04/2012 02:10

lovely, thank you for the comments. Anna is lovely but unfortunately with our surname it sounds like hannibal!!

You might as well go the whole hog and call her 'Middle Class' Wink

As of the two, def Matilda. Two place names together does look odd. And Matilda is a great name.

mimimomma · 09/04/2012 16:50

I like India Florence out of the two- also like Indira or Indy as other options. Good luck!

Debs3013 · 10/04/2012 15:29

My vote would be for Matilda but I'm biased - my dear old Nan was Florence Matilda Smile

CheshireDing · 10/04/2012 21:54

Prefer Matilda but becoming popular I think.

Our friend lives in Melbourne and they have a Matilda.

Do like Miranda though.

CherryBlossom27 · 11/04/2012 11:36

I love Florence, I had it on a short list but had a boy! I think I'd have it as a first name and Matilda as a middle name.

I don't think everyone would realise, but I think having Florence and India would be too many 'place names'. Florence is a beautiful city and I love anything Italian :)

CherryBlossom27 · 11/04/2012 11:37

I also tried to persuade DH to add Verona to the short list but he vetoed it :(

cherrypieplum · 11/04/2012 19:01

We've picked Matilda. Not heard of any around here. Yet!!

StyleGuile · 11/04/2012 19:57

We have both a Matilda (4) and a Florence (13) and I still love both names. I don't know of another Matilda or another Flo in either of their schools. Matilda is known as Mouse, Mousie or "Tilds", Florence is Flo, Flossie, Flossarina - lots of different affectionate names for them both!

myalias · 11/04/2012 19:58

Florence India sounds perfect

I would have said Matilda until you said you are on Oz. Not sure given Waltzing Matilda.
