I'm looking for classy* English girl names that aren't absolutely common like Elizabeth, but aren't stuffy and past their prime, like Muriel. Combination of scullery maid names and lady of the house names wanted, but more the latter!

Current List:

Georgiana
Henrietta
Cordelia
Harriet
Imogen
Beatrix
Clementine...except having doubts about this on an adult
Flora
Hermione-I know this and Penelope are Greek, but they also seem English, if that makes sense.
Penelope

*By "classy" I mean a name that isn't trying to hard, but isn't fished out of the gutter either.

My name is the last on your original list, OP, and lots of other people have suggested it. Tbh, I've never used, nor met another who used, the full name - we're always known by the shortened version!

Cortina · 07/04/2012 12:16

Leonora - she'll likely be the only one in the school.

It only seems to be used by posh people - you'll find one in every elite private school but not used more broadly?

BellaOfTheBalls · 07/04/2012 18:43

Cecily? I know a Cecily & she is the most beautiful little thing!

Bryony?

Apologies for Arrietty. Note time of previous post & you might understand my thinking, or lack of it. curses DS2 and his night owl habits

Probably a bit on the frilly end but I think Araminta (Minty) and Antigone (Tiggy) are both ace.

Maybe you need one of the Bennett sisters?

Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine (Kitty) or Lydia. There's also Georgiana, Charlotte and Caroline of course.

Or perhaps the Brideshead women?

Julia, Cordelia, Theresa, Cara, or Celia.

mirry2 · 07/04/2012 19:28

Arabella
Annabelle

EmilyRoo · 08/04/2012 01:50

I love Rowena, others I like:

Cordelia (too frilly overall though)
Catriona
Caroline
Tabitha
Leonora-I like it but would probably use Eleanora on account of the "E" initial

Will have a closer look later thanks everyone! :)

My DS was going to be Tabitha if he was a DD.

I love Leonora too and think Leo or Lenny would both be a fab nns for a girl!

Jess850 · 08/04/2012 09:09

Eleanor has slipped into pole position for our Girl choice today, over Esme. I love Alexandra, Marianne, Margot and Elizabeth but DH hates them. Violet is lovely he likes that too.. I am not keen on the others on the list.

MrsLetchlady · 08/04/2012 09:58

Hmmm, what do you mean by 'Classy'? Because many names used by the 'classiest' ie Upper Class tend to be just normal names...

Here's a few from the Telegraph birth announcements over the past few years...

Lady Harriet had a daughters called Iona and Amelia
Lady Lingfield had a granddaughter callled Emillia
Lady Sarah had a daughter called Lucy
Earl of Jersey had a daughter called Evangeline
Lady Gretton had a daughter called Eloise
Lady Stephanie had a daughter called Jodie
Lady Oxmantown had a daughter called Olivia
Lady Noelle had a daughter called Kathleen
Lady Jacinta had a daughter called Leila

All perfectly normal names, and some I have seen described on MN as a bit chavvy (not that I would agree with that).

Trouble is, so often the so called 'classy' names tend to be regarded as very 'try hard middle class'. Wasn't Sarah Ferguson forbidden from using the name 'Annabel' for example..?

What do you mean by 'classy'?

Bonsoir · 08/04/2012 10:02

My DD is Flora Elisabeth Zoë and my sister's DD is Lucie Constance Beatrice.

My entirely fictional other DD is Violet Clementine.

EmilyRoo · 09/04/2012 01:21

By "classy" I mean names that are the opposite of modern, trendy, and misspelled or unisex, didn't mean to imply anything about class!

Eleanor, Rosamund, And Caroline have gone in the list! I'm attempting to tread the line between classic/common and classy/less common. Rowena seems to be on that line, actually, so any more names from literature that aren't too tied to one character (like Ophelia, Guinevere and Hermione) would be lovely too! I like almost ALL of everyone's suggestions!

EmilyRoo · 09/04/2012 01:30

But I do have to admit that I'd rather get name suggestions akin to Leonora -ones that are only found in elite private schools-probably because I haven't gone to one, and wish I had!
