I love the name Pip for a boy but can we have this on its own? I don't like Philip but can't think of any other names that it could be shortened too. Any ideas?

What larks.

Could it be short for Peter or something?

Pip is a great name for a kid. Not sure it passes the profession test though as s grown up name...

I knew a very elderly Pip - that was good too in a "cuddly grandad" way.

Philip is a good name IMHO

Maybe give him Philip as a middle name, call him Pip as a baby and if he doesn't like it he could use his other name. I bet it'll grow on you.

Piper

Pip was in top 100 boys names last year (at 80) so can be a name on its own! I love it for a boy or girl but I would as it's my DD's name! It's from Philip for a boy and of course Philipa/Pippa for girl. I know lots of adult female Pip's but yet to meat a man. One thing I will say is we are both very short so knew we would never have a giant child! I can't see Pip fitting a really tall man! I love the name Bear but I can't see it on a short man! Maybe that's silly though!

I don't like Philip so would go with just Pip.

Spice17 · 05/04/2012 13:11

My mum has called me the nn Pip since I was little (my name's not Phillipa or anything vaguely similar though!) so I really liked the idea of it as a boys or girls middle name but was vetoed by DH! I think it's nice and also knew a young boy called Pip a while ago.

Our middle daughter has the nick name Pip. It bears no resemblance to her name. We called her pip squeak as a baby, and pip stuck. It really suits her.
You could choose any first name and use pip as a nick name.

doctordwt · 05/04/2012 13:48

Choose any name you want and just give him the nickname Pip - it will work;

or

Phillip
Peter
Phineas
Pillowfight (ok maybe not that)

I know a Pip and his full name is Peregrine. He is from a very well to do extremely posh family, it's a lovely name and he's a lovely chap.
