Is Florence really that popular? Does it matter? Am struggling to choose! Can you help? Thanks

Harriet is my favourite of the 2, nothing wrong with Florence though.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 04/04/2012 21:21

Harriet for me.... Makes me think of a smiling baby, a cheeky confident girl.... Shortened for a teen, and a strong name for a confident woman....

Florence just makes me think of severe Grin

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 04/04/2012 21:21

Bloody iPhone

That was Zebedee not severe Angry

Kellamity · 04/04/2012 21:22

Love them both so absolutely no help here Smile

curiositykitten · 04/04/2012 21:22

I prefer Florence. Harriet is lovely too, though!

TheNewandImprovedMrsHollywood · 04/04/2012 21:23

I do think Florence is quite popular at the moment, but I definitely don't think it matters! It's a lovely name - and I sense from your OP that it might be your preferred choice?! Both names are great, but I suppose I would go for Florence if pushed.

My DCs both have quite popular names, but I just don't care. I love their names! My mum says the names are a bit dull, but I think they're 'go anywhere, do anything' names.

browneyesblue · 04/04/2012 21:28

Harriet, definitely! When I saw it in the thread title it made me think how lovely and under-used it is. Florence is nice too, but I think Harriet is just gorgeous.

Ali2girls · 04/04/2012 21:29

Thanks - Florence was my original favourite but then quite a few people said is it after Florence and the Machine - so am now thinking that this could be happening a lot. Then thought how nice Harriet was so v confused! Could have Harriet Florence or Florence Harriet!

Harriet is less 'trendy' and more classic.

DoubleGlazing · 04/04/2012 22:21

Florence

cakeismysaviour · 04/04/2012 22:27

Harriet by a mile.

EllenParsons · 05/04/2012 00:55

Both just lovely! See which she looks like and suits better when born?

grewsum · 05/04/2012 08:34

the chances are she will also use shortened versions of her name so deciding which set of nns you prefer might help in making a decision

harry
hattie
etty
hetty

or

flo
flossie
florrie

both lovely names by the way although i personally slightly prefer harriet

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/04/2012 08:39

I know more Harriets than Florences, but prefer Harriet, I'm not keen on Flo, Flossie etc whereas I quite like Hattie etc.

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 05/04/2012 08:42

Harriet is much nicer.

puds11 · 05/04/2012 08:44

I know quite a few harriets, but no florences. I would definately go for florence plus flo is a really cute nickname

birdofthenorth · 05/04/2012 08:46

I know three Harriet's born this year so don't choose it on grounds of being less popular, think it's going to whoosh up the charts!

Both are lovely names but I do prefer Harriet.

belindarose · 05/04/2012 08:48

Love both of these. Couldn't use Harriet ourselves as many family members drop the 't' at the end and I wouldn't be able to bear it.

BeaditAli · 05/04/2012 08:59

Oh I love them both too but think I'd edge toward Florence as my favourite. I don't think popularity matters at all! And neither of those names will beat all the Evies, Olivias and Amelias.
I knew a very, very cool 20 year old Harri...... Always thought it was a fab nn for a young adult female.
Also, I wouldn't use both names together in case you have another DD in the future and still love the name you didn't go for this time

welovesausagedogs · 05/04/2012 09:37

Both are lovely, but i think Harriet just wins it - just that bit more unusual (you could keep Florence/Florrie for dd2?)

3boysgirlontheway · 05/04/2012 10:08

DD is Florence, I have never yet met another one (we are not in the UK though) She is almost 6 weeks old and it really suits her.

spiderlight · 05/04/2012 10:58

Harriet!

MrsLetchlady · 07/04/2012 15:05

Personally I love Harriet. It was on my girls list but DH wouldn't let me have it.

Its nice because its not a name that automatically gets shortened, but there are some really nice nicknames if you want to. I really liked Hetty for a little girl. Cutsey, with Harriet as a more mature name for when she grows up.

MrsLetchlady · 07/04/2012 15:06

Not Hetty, Hatty Grin

Raahh · 07/04/2012 15:12

I love both- my gran was Florence, and her mum, Harriet.
