Should I go with head or heart?

I am struggling whether to choose a sensible normal more traditional(not popular) name for my DD or a name that I love which is more quirky.

I have a professional career and worry, that if she wants to be a professional, she won't be taken seriously. Although my name isn't common it's not unusual.

Even though I love it, I think I should consider other people's views so she doesn't berate me when she's older.

So I guess I am asking: what is in a name?

Name I love: Imani

Names I like: Geneiveve, Vivienne, Gabriella

it would have to be Vivienne. lovely name

I would go with your heart - though having said that I totally love all your "head" names!

Imani is lovely, you should go with that and then something more conservative as a middle name, such as Imani Florence

FWIW, There's a mum at school called Imani, she's an incredibly high up and well respected professional (in her field, v prestigious) and her name is perfect for her and you wouldn't bat an eyelid at it iygwim

Your DD will only be the second one i've heard of!

Personally I find ethnic sounding names, however beautiful a bit odd attached to DCs with no links to that culture.

Posters were suggesting Marto for a DS on another thread and since the only one I know has an Italian Mum it felt odd.

its ok, i wouldnt choose it as i used to know twins called Amina and Imana.... and so that connection would put me off, but thats personal to me!

i love Genevieve and my dd was almost named that.

It sounds foreign, would this work against her when she grows up and applies for jobs.

purestcocoa · 06/04/2012 15:58

We are 'ethnic' and she has African roots on her dad's side. It shouldn't matter if it sounds foreign. If that employer has a problem with it then she won't want to work there anyway. Hopefully, she will be judged on her merits like her parents :).

I don't really want to get into a debate on names, but a lot of "traditional' names are of foreign origin. They have just been used more in the UK and are now deemed traditional.

Thanks again for the supportive comments and not being too harsh on my personal taste. I still love it!
