DD is 5 and half Italian. She would like a name that is popular in the UK. Can anyone think of a name that is Italianesque and also nice in English? I will put all suggestions to her and see which she prefers.

We live in the UK by the way.

TIA.

Are you really serious? You are going to change your 5 year old's name because she doesn't like it??

It is a beautiful name that you chose for her that reflects her heritage. She and you will really regret it in the future.

AnHonestHCA · 03/04/2012 23:31

I wanted to have my name changed to Rosemary or Gemma from the age of 4ish to the age of about 8

I LOVE my name it's way better than Rosemary or Gemma! don't do it!

threeleftfeet · 04/04/2012 00:15

I wanted to be Nancy for ages. Really glad I didn't change my name!

What about a nickname? Or how would you feel about her using her middle name?

threeleftfeet · 04/04/2012 00:16

No offence to any Nancys btw! Nothing wring with it as a name, it's just nothing like my actual name and really not me at all! It's my 8yo self!

FriggFRIGG · 04/04/2012 00:40

I wanted to be called nancy...I still want to called nancy.

I feel a name change coming on...

SodoffBaldrick · 04/04/2012 01:56

Are you actually serious OP?

garlicbutter · 04/04/2012 02:17

Carla. I've always like the name Carla. It makes me think of smouldering beauties of great character, like Loren in her prime or even Carla from Corrie!

I'm with Frigg, I still like my childhood preferred names - I had two of 'em. Since I've used them as online identities for ages, and been to meet-ups & things, I actually answer to them ... No, 'garlic' isn't one. Though I'd probably answer to it if the caller seemed a bit mumsnetty!

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
Garlic by any other name would be as stinky.

Hi my friends dd is called natalia??? or italia?? I personally love bella or Isabella x

lordsugarslovechild · 04/04/2012 10:05

I love Isabella too. Thats dd1 tho.

Last week she wanted to be Blubby so we've been calling her that to see if it sticks.

03angels · 04/04/2012 10:59

Aww that's cute- see if she sticks to it- more than likely a passing phase Smile

Bearhugs43 · 04/04/2012 18:53

I think every 5 year old girl has this phase - my dd has a very top 50 name (unintentionally) and still insisted it was terrible for a while. Like everything else - it will pass Grin

Badgerina · 04/04/2012 20:14

Kika?

DialMforMummy · 04/04/2012 20:48

I would not change her name. When I was young, I wanted my name to be changed to Pamela.....after Pamela in Dallas Blush
Chiara is a gorgeous name IMHO and does not sound stupid in English. I could understand if she was called Fanny. At this age, she will change her mind every week!

happybigbump · 04/04/2012 21:39

You're not serious, are you? You're willing to change your (half Italian) 5 year old's name because she doesn't like it at the moment? Because she can't get Fairy books with her name on it?

Give her confidence about herself and her (Italian) heritage and please don't give in to your 5 year old's demand to change her name. Chiara is beautiful!

colditz · 04/04/2012 21:41

Yes well my child would like to be called Sonic (genuinely).

I'm saying no because, apparently, I am the worst mum in the world, and furthermore, he hates me.

shrinkingnora · 04/04/2012 21:54

My 5 year old has been Han, Luke, Doctor, Amy and Yoda today. Bloody confusing.

D0oinMeCleanin · 04/04/2012 22:01

Dd1 called herself Cherry Apple Rose Blossom for a while. Cherry Apple were her first and middle names, Rose and Blossom were her surnames. She begged me for months to change her name legally. I told her if she still wanted to be Cherry Apple Rose Blossom she could change it when she was a 16. Shortly afterwards she refused to answer to anything other than Katy Perry. She begged me to change her name to Katy Perry. I told her the same thing. She is currently known as Jessie J Hmm

She too has a name that you cannot find on gift shop stationary. We order online. I will not change her name because she cannot find it in a gift shop, not even to one of her sensible suggestions like Amy or Beth or Rose.

TheOldestCat · 04/04/2012 22:02

DD's half-Italian friend is Carlotta, which I think is a beautiful name.

Don't all children hate their name at some point? I did because my name is so common; 5-year-old DD is cross because her name isn't common enough to be on pens etc in gift shops.

lordsugarslovechild · 05/04/2012 13:38

Well. I showed Chiara the thread. She hated all the suggestions and has decided to write a book called Chiara the Coral Reef Fairy. And illustrate it herself. So, she's happy for now. Smile

I want to change my name to Carlotta.

Chiara the Coral Reef Fairy sounds fab!

Dd2 (also 5) is Hattie and currently not liking her name (similar reason to your dd especially as dd1 is Ellie and you can get anything with her name on) its been a bit better lately as she got personalised pj and dressing gown fromdisney store for Christmas and I ordered her name in scripted wooden letters for bedroom wall and a keyring for her bookbag with a name on from a lovely company (small and gifted anything can be personalised) we did dither about calling her Harriet but decided that since we only ever liked Hattie we would stick to it (Annoyingly Harriet now popular and often onpencils/ purses etc) we went through options of abbreviations etc but for the moment she has stuck with Hattie am sure she'll curse us as she gets older ( and there are 90 children in her reception year at school so 3 classes her class appears to be the unusual names class as at least 7 other children boys and girls have names I have never heard off!)

popsicle1984 · 17/04/2012 21:09

My name is Chiara and I used to moan about it when I was little, but now I love that hardly anyone else has my name! I have an unusual (and not at all Italian!) middle name too which I also used to be embarrassed about, I'm sure she'll appreciate it when she's older.

The only thing that is annoying is always having to tell people how to spell/pronounce it.

PS take her on holiday to Italy, loadsa pens with her name on as I excitedly discovered at about age 8!

popsicle1984 · 17/04/2012 21:12

And no it's not pronounced like bloody Keira/Kira/Ciara, it's Key-ar-a!!

Ch in Italian Is pronounced like a K.

Journey · 17/04/2012 22:09

I must be missing something here! I know quite a few Chiaras. I didn't think it was that unusual. I always just thought it was Italian for Claire.

Pooka · 17/04/2012 22:13

Love chiara!

Ds1 announced a few months ago that he wants to be called rafe.

I expected it to blow over, but its still something he mentions from time to time. I do actually quite like it. But am not changing his name... Have told him to think about it for a LOT longer!
