Toby or Tobias

Am only 5w pg with DC2 but getting excited thinking about names. Really like Toby for a boy - but do you think of this as a nickname / shortening of Tobias? I love Toby but Tobias sounds really Germanic (not that it's a bad thing, but we're not German!)
Thoughts?

i love Tobias

DoubleGlazing · 30/03/2012 09:32

Tobias with Toby for short. Toby too nicknamey on its own.

DoubleGlazing · 30/03/2012 09:33

Tobias is a name of Hebrew origin used in the Old Testament. I don't think of it as German.

ChasingSquirrels · 30/03/2012 09:38

Mine is just Toby, addressed as Toby, Tobe or Tobes.

trikken · 30/03/2012 09:46

I have a 'Toby' too. just Toby not Tobias. I love it. despite being three in same primary school. but u could get that with any name.

juliewoojulie · 30/03/2012 09:49

love the name toby, wouldnt use tobias but i dont dislike it, just think toby is enough of a name.

puzzletree · 30/03/2012 11:16

My DS2 is just Toby. I don't like the longer names, and Toby's long been a stand alone name.

JessieEssex · 30/03/2012 12:10

Thanks all - am in two minds - if it's a boy, we would just refer to him as Toby and not Tobias and I agree that Toby is a name in it's own right, but I still feel like we could use the longer name on the birth certificate and Toby for all other times.
Oh well, 35 weeks to decide!
Thanks

As I posted earlier, mine is just Toby - he has a long middle name partly to counteract the short first name, but then you never actually use it.

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 30/03/2012 15:51

Tobias is much nicer.

NunWithADirtyHabbit · 30/03/2012 16:50

I have a Toby (and i LOVE the name) ...but i do wish i had called him Tobias on the BC

tunaday · 30/03/2012 19:11

If you officially called him Tobias but then used Toby would that be the best of both? You/he can then have the choice when he's older as to preference and may vary between the 2. Love both names

ifancyashandy · 30/03/2012 19:14

Tobias is lovely. And gives you the best of both worlds!

Aphria · 30/03/2012 19:16

I have a Toby too, which I love (despite most people here in Ireland thinking it's a dog's name!). Don't like Tobias though.

zipzap · 30/03/2012 19:26

Toby. But then I'm biased as I chose Toby rather than Tobias for ds2 Grin

Oakmaiden · 30/03/2012 19:28

I have a Tobias, but he is known to most of the world as Toby and to me as Tobes... Grin

I think it is nice for him to have the choice of using his full name or shortened name when he gets older.

Kayzr · 30/03/2012 19:29

I love both but Tobias just beats Toby for me.

Petrean · 30/03/2012 19:30

Toby... Love Toby. I initially wanted to call DS Toby but DH hated it.

pinkhebe · 30/03/2012 19:31

I have a Toby, I never thought about having the longer Tobias. GToby has been a stand alone name for a long time - thinking about Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare.

And yes, he's more often Tobes or Tobe :D

(only 2 in his very large Junior school)

BlackEyed · 30/03/2012 19:32

My nephew is a Toby but short for Tobijah which is another option as your not sure on Tobias.

InvaderZim · 30/03/2012 19:40

Tobias reminds us too much of Tobias Funke from arrested development, do I found Tobyn as an acceptable long name for Toby.

welovesausagedogs · 31/03/2012 22:14

I like Toby.

pinkandsparklytoo · 31/03/2012 22:37

Mine is a Tobias, also known as Toby
