I was listening to Beatles "when I'm 64" today and I had a chuckle at how they predicted " grandchildren on your knee Vera, Chuck and Dave" If you think about it the grandchildren that you would expect them to be singing about would likely have been born in the 90-00 years and I dont recall any of them being popular names.

Made me wonder though anyone else noticed stuff like this in songs? Anyone named after a song they loved?

(oh and apologies to those of you who now will have that song stuck in your head for the rest of the day)

DH bought me Sgt Peppers cd for my birthday recently. My DS loves that song!

I am Clair, because of a song in the 70s apparently, though I've never actually heard it.

And do they really sing "Bruce" in that ELO song think called Don't Let Me Down, and if they do, why?

insancerre · 28/03/2012 20:56

I am named after the Beatles song 'Michelle'
DD is named after the Sisters of Mercy song 'Alice'

springforward I always sing "bruce" even though I know that's not right as well, so I looked it up...

"The chorus uses the nonsense word "grroosss" (as it is written in the liner notes) which has caused much confusion and amusement over the years. This word has no meaning and was simply a word that Jeff had made up on the spot as he was recording the lyrics. While recording at Musicland Studios in Germany, the German engineer, Mack, expressed his surprise at Jeff's use of a German word in his lyrics. The German word "Grüß" (written as "grooss" in the standard Latin alphabet) means "greeting" in German. It was totally by accident that Jeff's made up word "grroosss" sounded like the German word, but the decision was made to leave it in the song. Later, upon the song's release, many people misinterpreted this word as "Bruce" as if Jeff were singing the song to an imaginary person named Bruce (which would be odd considering that in the song, he is singing to a female). Somehow the rumor even started that this was a veiled reference in a lawyer for the band named Bruce, which is totally false. In any case, Jeff noted that during live shows, many fans sang the lyric as "Bruce" rather than "grroosss". Shortly afterwards, he began singing it as "Bruce" as well. This new lyric is most noticeable on the Zoom Tour Live DVD concert."

Oops! [Blush]

Right, I'm off to set DH straight now, we had this conversation in the car the other day and neither of us could work out what Bruce had to do with anything!!

SardineQueen · 28/03/2012 21:35

yeah but did you get to the end "In any case, Jeff noted that during live shows, many fans sang the lyric as "Bruce" rather than "grroosss". Shortly afterwards, he began singing it as "Bruce" as well. " so you are now both right!!!

SardineQueen · 28/03/2012 21:36

Sorry OP for the sidetrack!

notforlong · 28/03/2012 21:39

I met a DF and DS at a soft play last week and the 4 year old DS was called Dave, although that is DHs name I found it really funny.

Hassled · 28/03/2012 21:40

Springforward - it's here . A lovely song. Lovely to be named after it, I think.

bigkidsdidit · 28/03/2012 21:40

I know a baby Dave Grin and a baby Reg!

Of all the odd names I came across in eccentric South London cafes they gave me most pause!

Hassled · 28/03/2012 21:42

Ignore me- that was someone covering it badly.
Original is

Springforward · 28/03/2012 21:53

Hassled, thank you - will have a listen! :)

My sister used to get teased mercilessly by the family with the Johnny Cash song "a boy named sue" (I trust you will have guessed she is a Susan).

Frikadellen · 28/03/2012 22:07

Spring Ive always loved that song it is just so sweet what a lovely song to be named after..

dd2 is Eloisa but many asked dh if it was after the dammed song I dont think that is the worst (everyone wants to please Eloiseeee) however she is named it because I had a dream we had a little girl and called her Eloise dh prefered Eloisa I said fine.

Ooh, I love that song, Frika!

Thinking about it, I know a couple of Kayleighs who are about the right age to have been Marillion-inspired.

And we have a Ruby in the family, born around time of the Kaiser Chiefs song.

PercyFilth · 28/03/2012 22:44

Sorry, but that Clair song is pretty creepy.

Springforward · 29/03/2012 09:06

Hassled, I just listened to it - my late Dad gave me that name apparently, I had no idea he was so sentimental!

Clawdy · 29/03/2012 17:04

My dad was jazz-mad and wanted me and my sister named for jazz songs...Georgia and Carolina. Unfortunately my mum was horrified and picked two boring and ordinary names which really date us now, many years later! Sad

MummysLittleSunbeams · 29/03/2012 22:21

Oh I love love love Clair by Gilbert O'Sullivan. It always makes me well up & reminds me of growing up in the 70's.
