Not for me, for friend.

Lots of middle name Mays around, but what do you think of it for a first name?

I like, but friend is interested to know what others think.

TIA

I like it as a name by iteslf, don't like it if it's preceded with Tilly, Lexie, Ellie etc.

May on its own is quite simple and elegant.

welovesausagedogs · 28/03/2012 12:24

I like it, prefer it spelt this way though: Mae

Stellan · 28/03/2012 13:00

I like it when I think of the month of May (always sunny!) but not as much when I think of the verb.

My own tastes incline to longer names so I would be inclined to go with Mabel or Mamie.

DoubleGlazing · 28/03/2012 14:24

Lovely :)

Nixea · 28/03/2012 17:21

I like it, although my first though is May from Pokemon! Blame my DD who's obsessed with the programme!

NoWave · 28/03/2012 17:22

Prefer April.

TerrierMalpropre · 28/03/2012 17:23

I absolutely love it as a first name but not as a middle. I'd spell it Mae too.

Clawdy · 28/03/2012 17:27

May is delightful on its own. Mae is the American spelling, not struck on that.

madaboutmadmen · 28/03/2012 18:28

Mai is Welsh for May, pronounced 'my'.

CupOfBrownJoy · 28/03/2012 18:29

Lovely. Pretty and will do for a baby or a grown up.

I would keep it beautiful and simple and spell it May

winkle2 · 28/03/2012 19:15

I prefer maya

Alligatorpie · 28/03/2012 19:18

It is becoming more popular, I kow three May's under the age of four. I find it a bit dull to be honest.

nizlopi · 28/03/2012 19:27

Oh lord, don't spell it Mae, its really pointless and just looks stupid.

May as a first name is lovely, as a middle name, spelt Mae and preceded with 'Ellie' or similar its awful though!

Lunarlyte · 20/05/2012 21:25

I read that 'Mae' is a Scottish diminutive form of 'Margaret'. Since Margaret means 'precious', then this is what Mae means when spelled that way.

justlemonade · 20/05/2012 21:26

Nice. I prefer May to Mae also.

MarySA · 20/05/2012 21:49

It's OK. Definitely prefer May to Mae.

exoticfruits · 20/05/2012 22:06

I prefer May- don't like Mae.

nizlopi · 21/05/2012 16:13

Oh god, don't spell it 'Mae'. It looks SO stupid that way. It looks like you -

A) Want to look like you're a special snowflake for your ultra unique way of spelling simple words

or

B) Do not know how to spell simple words.

I do not know why people do this to their kids. Just no.

Lunarlyte · 21/05/2012 16:39

Ay Nizlopi steady on! It's a perfectly valid way to spell the name! 'Mae' a Scottish variant of 'May' that carries a different meaning.

Quite harsh criticism that isn't totally informed.

FunnysInLaJardin · 21/05/2012 16:43

Mae West anyone?! I like it, with either spelling

MrsJohnDeere · 21/05/2012 17:34

May is lovely.
Mae awful.

nizlopi · 21/05/2012 17:58

We all know that the vast majority of people naming their daughters 'Mae' aren't doing it because of their links with Scotland. They're doing it because they're 'super special'

Lunarlyte · 21/05/2012 18:53

Ignorant ?and? presumptuous! Nice.

nizlopi · 21/05/2012 19:45

right now I'm presuming your daughter is called Mae.

Lunarlyte · 21/05/2012 20:34

As if to stress the point I've made, you are wrong.
