I'd always assume Flossie was short for Florence.

spendthrift · 23/03/2012 10:35

Flora if not Florence. But if you don't want to sound Scots or butter, try Floella.

Stellan · 23/03/2012 10:36

Felicity? A friend of mine, Felicity, goes by Fliss(ie) and I don't suppose Flossie would be too much of a stretch.

sonniboo · 23/03/2012 11:10

Candyfloss

Tooth floss

Seriously, I've only heard it as a nickname for Florence.

LittlePandaBear · 23/03/2012 11:53

Florissa?

CecilyP · 23/03/2012 11:56

Flora, definitely Flora.

tara0202 · 23/03/2012 11:59

Florianna? Suppose nn would more likely be florie though.

sonniboo · 23/03/2012 11:59

But Flora is so short already - you'd not shorten it. And if you did it would probably by Flory/Florie, wouldn't it ?

sonniboo · 23/03/2012 12:00

Flossina?

CecilyP · 23/03/2012 12:05

I see Florie as short for Florence. Flossie is short for Flora in much the same way as Maisie is short for May eg not actually shorter at all.

tammytoby · 23/03/2012 12:08

Flossilla?

I'd have thought Florence otherwise.

SnapSnafu · 23/03/2012 12:10

I have a Flora and sometimes call her Flossie Jo or Flossie Bossy (or Flora Borealis which led to my older daughter thinking her middle name was Alice).

I guess you could use if for Felicity too?

Spendthrift Although we are Scottish, we've come across far more Crouch-End-style Flora's than Scottish. And it's margarine. Sheesh.

squoosh · 23/03/2012 12:21

Dental or Millonthe

sherocks · 23/03/2012 12:24

Fleur

Tricksterfrickster · 23/03/2012 12:30

I could have written your thread OP so watching with interest! Love Flossie but not Florence, and not really Flora either! Don't think a child can go through life as a Floss though!

poppydaisy · 23/03/2012 13:18

Doesn't Flossie make you think of flossing your teeth... or maybe that's just me.

I like Flora though.

DamselInDisarray · 23/03/2012 13:22

Floella.

I think it's horrible, but it might do.

Or you could call her Elizabeth and the give her just about anything as a day-to-day name. It's what they all did back in the day.

notso · 23/03/2012 13:28

The only Flossie I know is actually called Louise.

CaramelFreddo · 23/03/2012 14:00

I know a Flossy who is called Felicity.

LucyManga · 23/03/2012 16:06

Fenella

missingmymarbles · 23/03/2012 20:45

i think we will call her something completely different and just call her flossie anyway. i don't think of teeth, i just think it is sooooo cute Grin dh said yeah for a 2 year old not a grown up! Grin which is why she will have a proper name first
