I heard it in the park the other day and thought it was lovely, but wondered what it could be short for.

Winifred.

MarjorieAntrobus · 22/03/2012 09:42

Or Winston, if a boy.

ViolaCrayola · 22/03/2012 09:56

I LOVE Winnie. But not very keen on Winifred.

PotteringAlong · 22/03/2012 09:58

Isn't Bruce Foresyth's wife called Winella?

MorningHasBroken · 22/03/2012 10:03

Lots of Welsh names also end in 'wyn' or 'wen'; Bronwyn/Blodwyn/Tegwen etc

Bluestocking · 22/03/2012 10:16

I would think Winifred or Guinevere?

Stellan · 22/03/2012 10:33

Winifred is the obvious candidate but maybe Winona, Winter, Edwina, Gwyneth or, at a stretch, Gwendolyn, Wilhelmina or Whitney? Apparently Winnie-the-Pooh's namesake was Winnipeg.

Use Bronwen not Bronwyn (i.e. -wen, not -wyn endings for girls' names) though!

Winnie is enough of a name to standalone, in my opinion.

DoubleGlazing · 22/03/2012 10:43

Winifred

DharmaBumpkin · 22/03/2012 11:04

The Pooh, of course

othersideofchannel · 22/03/2012 11:05

Wilhelmina

othersideofchannel · 22/03/2012 11:06

Winfred/Winifred are boys names, aren't they?

DharmaBumpkin · 22/03/2012 11:09

And even then I wasn't the first.

Aside: Winnie the Pooh was named after a bear who was named after the town, Winnipeg, so it's not that Winnipeg was a person's name.

My Aunt Winnie was Williamina.

ellangirl · 22/03/2012 20:41

The only one I know is short for Anwyn

kgirl · 22/03/2012 22:45

My dd nickname is Winnie. Her name is Quinn.

SodoffBaldrick · 23/03/2012 01:14

OtherSide - Wilfred is a boy's name. Winifred is a girl's name.

I had a great aunt Winnie (Winifred), though she died well before I was born.

It's no better or worse that all the other old lady names - far nicer than Florence and Beatrice, IMO. I bet it will be in the next 'round' of old lady names, as people move on from the more cutesy ones, looking for something more substantial.

bobbledunk · 23/03/2012 01:22

Horrible name.

smokeandglitter · 23/03/2012 01:41

Such a cute name.

Short for Winter too :) Or Winsome. I also knew a Bronwyn who became known as 'Winny'.

SkiBumMum · 23/03/2012 04:17

The witch

tunaday · 23/03/2012 09:45

The only Winnie I know is 96. Short for Winifred. She has always detested the name and as soon as she could used her middle name of Louise. I couldnt imagine her called 'Winifred' and to be honest couldnt imagine anyone else called that!

cheltmum · 23/03/2012 15:14

The Winnie I know is short for Juanita. (Personally, I prefer Juanita....)

LucyManga · 23/03/2012 16:04

I know a Winnie who is Arwen

weegiemum · 23/03/2012 17:11

Gosh imagine having a gorgeous name like Arwen and using Winnie !

The only Winnie I ever knew was a nice old dear who worked in my Gran's shop who liked to take her falsies out to drink her tea!
