Clara too close to auntie Claire

i love Clara, but my sil ( who I like, but am not trying to name the baby after iykwim) is Claire. There are no other aunties to get offended, apart from my brothers partner, but since we all live in different countries, she would never make the connection.

Is it too close? Would everyone assume the baby is named after her? Or maybe if we used it as a middle name?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Honestly, no, not too close at all - the names have very different vibes.

I really wouldn't think there was a connection between the two names.

DoubleGlazing · 22/03/2012 08:28

If you pronounce it Clah-ra (I prefer this) then it doesn't sound too similar. Some people pronounce it Claire-a though.

belgo · 22/03/2012 08:30

Agree with sodoffbaldrick - the names are close in spelling but very different in vibe.

Aworryingtrend · 22/03/2012 09:44

I don't think its too similar. We have a very close relation called Clair and I have Clara on my list as i think its different enough.

abbypumpkin · 22/03/2012 09:52

I don't think it's too close and wouldn't have though that you named baby after her

squoosh · 22/03/2012 11:20

I think they're very different names. Clara should of course be pronounced clah-ra, claire-a sounds bizarro to me.

HardCheese · 22/03/2012 11:57

I wouldn't assume a connection, though obviously at some level, they're different linguistic versions of the same name, along the lines of Peter, Pierre, Pyotr, Peadair etc. If you called your baby Pierre, and had a relative called Peter, would you feel it was the same name?

Clara is lovely.

Littlecherublegs · 22/03/2012 12:27

No, I dont see this as a problem.
Clare is a lovely name - go for it if you love it!

We are thinking of naming our LO the same name as one of my best friends - its not named after her we just love the name (I always have!).
I think my friend will see it as a compliment and will be flattered more than anything else.

birdofthenorth · 22/03/2012 16:03

I don't think they are sufficiently alike to worry about it, but then again does it really matter if SIL thinks DN is named after her?

NagoosBeenCleaningWindows · 22/03/2012 16:06

Use the name.

It's lovely :)

NagoosBeenCleaningWindows · 22/03/2012 16:06

biased since watching Paul Newman in The Long Hot Summer

What birdofthenorth said.

Clara was traditionally pronounced Clare - a (rhyme with Sarah) in the UK. Clah - ra is the continental pronunciation which has now apparently become the 'norm' in the UK. Prefer the old version myself.

Alligatorpie · 23/03/2012 04:47

Thanks, i think we may use it for a middle name, now we just need a first name. Any suggestions for a first name that goes with Clara?
