Do you have an Emmeline?

Or are you one? If so how often is it mistaken for Emily and how annoying do you/ your DD find it?

It's my favourite girls name, but I'm worried it'll be confused for Emily (very popular near me) every time...

My friends name is Emmalyn not sure if
That sounds the same as the name you have mentioned.. Either way no one calls her emily or Emma however she gets called Em a lot x

SenoritaViva · 21/03/2012 13:44

I have a friend called Emmeline. I don't think she's ever had a problem tbh. It is very different (whereas my dd is Amelie which sounds like Emily and is often confused).

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/03/2012 13:53

Do you have an Emmeline? Yes we do!

If so how often is it mistaken for Emily I'd say on average only EVERY SINGLE PERSON mistakes it for Emily.

how annoying do you/ your DD find it? I don't find it annoying at all. People have even asked me if its a name we've made up. DD is only 4 though so she may well find it annoying later. As for now though, we all love the name and really glad we chose it.

Kindling · 21/03/2012 13:55

I know of an Emmeline who pronounced Emma-lie-n so very different from Emily...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/03/2012 14:00

Oh i remember having a conversation at work when I'd just returned back from Mat Leave where a colleague was trying to convince me that the name is pronounced £mma--lie-n as in Caroline and that I'd got it terribly wrong Grin

birdofthenorth · 21/03/2012 14:15

That's what I suspected, Jilted. But glad it hasn't spoilt the name for you. Tis a fabulous name.

Wasn't Mrs Pankhurst Emma-Leen not Emma-Line? I think of Emmaline as an American mistake thb!!

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/03/2012 14:19

Yes, its Emme-leen not Emmaline. DD saw the name Emmeline in a book I was reading yesterday and got really excited that someone had the same name, bless her.

Stellan · 21/03/2012 14:20

Yes, I think Emmeline Pankhurst's name is said EM-eh-leen.

Stellan · 21/03/2012 14:23

If you like Emmeline, you might also like Amelina. Good chance of being mistaken for Amelia or Angelina though!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/03/2012 14:28

Part of the reason it doesn't bother me is that most gilrs of her age in this town are named either Evie or Isobel, so she was always going to stand out if I didn't pick one of those two names and the other reason is that the idiotic comments just make the other person look silly Grin.

birdofthenorth · 21/03/2012 14:57

Do you end up introducing her as "Emmeline, as in Pankhurst" Jilted, or do you just go down the "mmeline" -"Emily?" -"No, Emmeleeeennnn" route?!

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/03/2012 16:59

No, I just introduce her as Emmeline. If it's someone we'll meet again then I'll usually correct them, as obviously they will only half listen and assume its Emily! If it's someone we won't meet again then I'll usually not bother to correct them.

If you do choose Emmeline you'll be surprised how many people haven't heard of Mrs Pankhurst. In 4.5 years we've only had 2 people say, "oh, as in Emmeline Pankhurst, how lovely".

Even with the confusion I'd still choose Emmeline if we could go back in time, it just suits her so much.

KateShmate · 21/03/2012 17:38

Slightly different, but we have an Emme and sometimes spell it Emmie simply because so many people call her 'Emma' (which I really don't like!).
Some people think it is pronounced 'Em' too - wish we'd just named her 'Emmie' officially, would have been so much easier!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/03/2012 17:42

Kate hadn't met any Emmes or Emmies until DD started ballet and there are two Emmys!

LondonNadiy · 21/03/2012 19:55

Kate - I' personally always avoid saying 'Oh, as in...' in response to a name, however good I thought the connotations were - I'd always think 'Pankhurst' but would never say it in case I'd offend - you might hate her, or hate the inference that you named your daughter after someone etc., so it may not be that people don't think it!

KateShmate · 21/03/2012 20:10

JJJ How strange! We're yet to meet another Emme/Emmie/Emmy!

LondonNadiy Is it truly awful that I had no idea who Emmeline Pankhurst was until I googled her and the penny dropped ?

Hooey · 21/03/2012 20:19

I have an Emmeline nm Emmie and I have exactly the same as experience as JJJ although I have to admit Blush I do find it quite irritating emphasising the Emmeline over Emily. I feel like I'm saying it with a Texan drawl most of the time.

Having said that, I love the name and wouldn't change it for the world. I also get people asking me where I've got that name from Hmm and if they have heard of Mrs Pankhurst, they think she's an Emily!

ledkr · 21/03/2012 20:23

I was going to call dd Emmeline but didnt as i thought she would just get called Emily. It is her 2nd name though,i love it.

margoandjerry · 21/03/2012 20:26

Emmeline is lovely. I'd say "Emmeline as in the Hot Chocolate song" but that does age me somewhat!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2012 12:33

ledkr once had a lovely lady ask me DDs name and then proceed to tell me that they had wanted to call it their DD but, and I quote "didn't want to burden her so we used it as her second name instead" ShockGrin.

London forgot that we have met one other Emmeline. The other Mum was distinctly unimpressed that she'd met another and asked me where I'd got the name from then proceeded to tell me that she'd named her daughter after Bill Cosby's Mum, so obviously she thought that she was very different from my more common Pankhurst derived name Grin.

TinkerMaloo · 22/03/2012 13:02

I wanted Emmeline for a girl but DH has veoted it as he said everyone will think its Emily and it will piss him and her and probably me off. I already find it hard to cope with people calling my daughter Marianne Mary-Anne all the time... Grrr!

IKilledIgglePiggle · 22/03/2012 13:05

I have a 15 mo Emmeline, she may as well be called Emily as that is what EVERYONE hears, I love it though.

birdofthenorth · 22/03/2012 14:20

Hmm, this is what I suspected! But I'm still undeterred I think, for I suspect it is the best name in the world Smile. Possibly after DD1's name (Bess, mistaken for Beth on a daily basis, but still perfect).

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2012 14:48

Oh I love Bess too!

birdofthenorth · 22/03/2012 15:13

You clearly have excellent taste, Jilted!
