Seren or Caitlin?

Hi, what are your opinions on the names Seren and Caitlin and which do you prefer?

We are in England and Caitlin would be pronounced Kate-lin. Is it likely to be pronounced differently by others? (I know Kate-lin isn't considered to be the 'correct' Irish pronounciation)

Middle names would probably be Seren Christina or Caitlin Saoirse.

Any opinions or other name suggestions appreciated

Thanks

I think I prefer Seren, but I'm not quite sure why. I personally wouldn't choose it as we don't have a Welsh connection, but that isn't and shouldn't be a deciding factor for anyone else.

Caitlin is lovely, but feels a bit 8 years ago, or something. As for pronunciation, the debate will rage and rage Grin though for the record i have Irish friends who pronounce their DD's name spelt that way as Kate-lyn. If you team it with Saoirse, would you pronounce that correctly? Bottom line, would you be bothered by people pronouncing it a way other than you do, or telling that you have it 'wrong'?

I think Seren Christina runs together really well.

metrognome · 20/03/2012 23:25

Thanks sodofbaldrick :)

I wouldn't be too bothered by people saying it was 'wrong', but I would if it was mispronounced too often and she had to keep 'correcting' people, as my name is constantly mispronounced and it is a PITA. Saoirse would be pronounced Seer-sha.

Grin

Re name pronounciation, DD has a name which can be pronounced 1 of 3 ways and generally I take a pretty relaxed view of it; well, a very relaxed view of it when they meet her for the first time, as how are they to know which is 'correct'?

But I have to say, it does get slightly annoying when people who know her keep mispronouncing it. I'm not sure how she will feel herself when she's old enough to be the one doing the correcting. I hope it doesn't piss her off too much.

I guess you have to weigh up how much of an annoyance it might be. Rightly or wrongly, in the UK, I really don't think it will be too much of an issue.

I prefer Caitlin. Seren is getting a bit faddy, although I do like Serena.

Poledra · 21/03/2012 09:55

I like them both but am biased in favour of Caitlin, as I have one Grin she's 8 years old, SodOffBaldrick, so you're right on the money there. We're in England, and no-one has pronounced her name as anything but Kate-lyn. The number of different spellings of it we've had on birthday invites etc is amazing though (and doesn't bother me one bit!).

smother · 21/03/2012 09:55

hmmm, both gorgeous names, I love them both. Hard to say which is nicer.... I would see what she looks like when you meet her!

soupandsnow · 21/03/2012 10:00

seren. really lovely name

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/03/2012 10:06

Seren. Lovely.

Kayano · 21/03/2012 11:49

Caitlin - my dd has it as a middle name

I pronounce it Kathleen because I picked it for my mother and they have Irish roots

DH and the rest of the world
Seemingly pronounce in katelyn Sad

Littlecherublegs · 21/03/2012 11:50

Both are lovely though I'm leaning more towards Caitlin which will probably be on our shortlist!

LondonNadiy · 21/03/2012 18:52

Seren's really nice - I've not heard that one before! Caitlin is lovely too - I prefer it pronounced at Cate-lin, but in an Irish lilt which makes it sound like Cath-leen anyway! Love Saoirse - I'm using it for my DD.

Irish spellings and pronunciations are annoying to spell out over here but you get used to it - I haven't said my name to anyone who's going to write it down since I was about 6, I just spell it out from the start! I don't think that would be a problem with Caitlin, but bear in mind that if she did have to spell out Caitlin, she would have to spell out both of her names - you won't find 10 people in the whole of England who can spell Saoirse on their own!

shockers · 21/03/2012 18:57

DS2 had a teacher called Seren who was a really lovely lady. I always felt she lived up to her name... she had great serenity.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/03/2012 20:42

Seren is welsh for star apparently. Which is apparently an issue if you attend a welsh school that gives out certificates for star of the week! Grin I love it. It's beautiful.

mathanxiety · 22/03/2012 16:22

Seren.

Or Saoirse.

Seren Christina and Saoirse Christina are both lovely imo.

(Really don't like Caitlin)
