Help! Not sure what goes with Sibling name!

Have started thinking about names and throwing them around with DP (who doesn't seem to like any of the ones I do and vice versa) but in addition i'm struggling to find names I really like to go with DS's name (Kyle - and chosing that in itself was a struggle!). Surname is 2 syllables and begins with F (so sadly all F names are out!).

Although it's not a firm requirement i'd quite like something celtic. What are your thoughts on some of these names? Any suggestions most welcome! (sorry i've listed rather a lot!!)

Boys
Joel
Harris
Rory
Jake
Hamish
Eden
Jay
Lachlan
Magnus
Pascal
Zane

Girls
Melody
Cassie
Cerys (absolutely LOVE this name but really not sure, think it sounds too similar to DS's?)
Seren
Tegan
Saskia
Agnes
Astrid
Hannah
Niamh
Naomi
Esme
Iris
Skye
Harmony
Hope
Holly
Megan
Zadie
Nesta

I like Rory, Hamish, Seren, Esme and Naomi best. I had a baby girl six weeks ago and they were all on my shortlist.

PieMistress · 16/03/2012 22:12

Thanks scarletts it's so difficult! I get people telling me my son's name is 'a naughty boy's name' (!) but I guess some people will always want to voice their opinion!

I like

Joel, Hamish, Rory and Jake from the boys' list

Melody, Cassie, Tegan, Hannah, Naomi, Hope, Holly and Megan from the girls' list

agora1 · 17/03/2012 07:47

Yay - I have a Cerys and love the name. If you don't mind the alliteration, and I don't, go for it!

For a boy I like Harris

exoticfruits · 17/03/2012 08:08

The only Edens I know are girls.

Hannah, Naomi and Megan.
Joel and Jake.

YouChangeWithTheWeather · 17/03/2012 08:18

Hamish and Iris.
I like the symmetry with Kyle and Iris.

cece · 17/03/2012 08:21

You actually have my two DD's names in that list plus my dogs name... Grin

PieMistress · 17/03/2012 08:48

I'm glad the consensus so far is that Cerys sounds okay with Kyle? We both really really love the name and although it is a little 'samey' as DS's for most of their lives they won't be known together IYSWIM? I also thought about Agnes but spelt Agyness but swithering. We both also really love Megan but it's a very popular name here (I know of at least 4) (am in Scotland).

If anybody has any other suggestions to throw into the pot then please do!

Thanks for feedback :)

agora1 · 17/03/2012 10:00

I personally don't like Agnes/Agyness at all.

Megan was our alternative name for Cerys. Ironically she is now one of two Cerys' in her nursery and there are no Megans. You never can tell!

Alternatives: Carys; Orla; Bethan; Bethany; Bronwen

I also love Cassie from your list

Bluestocking · 17/03/2012 10:06

Don't for goodness sake spell Agnes "Agyness" - the only reason that Agyness Deyn (whose real name is Laura Hollins) calls herself that is because she was told by a numerologist that her career would take off if she changed her name to something that was numerologically more successful.

PieMistress · 17/03/2012 10:07

There are 2 Kyle's in his class at nursery (although to be fair we are in Scotland). I think our current favourite boys name is Harris, I know it's more of a surname but we both just really love it and am struggling to find one that I like quite as much?

I think Megan flows really well with Kyle (and also our names!) but there is something about Cerys I just really love, it's so pretty (thinking either Mae, Grace, or Elizabeth for middle name). It's the same initial as DP though. We also both love Cassie and Niamh. Last night we actually discussed Bethan and both liked it! It took us over a week to pick a name for DS, I can see the same again (although staying on team yellow so won't know till the day!)

Normally I don't like changing the spelling of names but that was the only one I did like. We thought about Agnes because it's my Granny's name (although she gets called Nancy, not quite sure why). There are other names I like better on our list but not discounting it quite yet!

OP posts:
agora1 · 17/03/2012 10:32

I think we share a similar taste in names! Niamh from your list was our alternative name for DD1.

One of the reasons we discounted Megan was because we felt it didn't flow with our surname.

I know a few Kyles too, but then I'm also in Scotland. Harris was the boys name that jumped out at me from your list, and lots of boys names are surnames so I wouldn't let that put you off.

Neither of my girls had their name chosen at birth, it took us a few days each time.

abbypumpkin · 17/03/2012 10:56

Like Jake best from boys.
Girls like Seren, Holly, Hannah and cassie.

Don't see any problem with Cerys, first letter has same sound but the names are quite different

marshmallowpies · 17/03/2012 13:31

Kyle and Rory or Kyle and Hamish definitely get a big thumbs up from me. Rory and Hamish are GREAT names.

Not massively keen on many of the names on the girls list, but I think a two syllable name goes better with a short name (i.e. Kyle and Naomi or Esme sounds better than Kyle and Hope).

PieMistress · 17/03/2012 13:41

Agree marshmallow about the 2 syllables. I wonder if with Niamh there is a problem throughout life with its spelling or does everybody know how to spell it? I haven't discussed names with anybody else in RL (have a few pregnant friends and would gutted to have to chose something else!). Although i'd prefer something celtic based some of the names I love aren't so will need to compromise somewhere!

Will probably out myself here but DP's surname is Fryer if that helps with any suggestions! It's quite an awkward one (and sadly blew away Freya, Florence and Fergus/Fergal for me!)

OP posts:
marshmallowpies · 17/03/2012 13:55

What a pity about Fergus not going with the surname - I love it too! :)

DH is not keen on using Celtic origin names as he is worried about the spelling/pronunciation thing too - I have Welsh heritage and he has Irish, but I really like Fergus and Douglas as boys names...DH said 'but neither of us is Scottish!' Honestly...men can be so logical sometimes...

Was typing in a hurry so hadn't looked properly at the girl's names, there are some lovely ones there: I especially like Naomi, Saskia, Astrid and Esme, but Esme is very popular atm I think.

PercyFilth · 17/03/2012 14:45

Annis and Anish are old and authentic spellings of Agnes. (Agyness is beyond awful though)

PieMistress · 20/03/2012 22:02

There are some names that work well with the same initial as surname but in our case F sadly doesn't :(

OP posts:
MadameChinLegs · 20/03/2012 22:18

I like Rory and Jake on your boys list. What about Scott? Luke?

I like most of your girls list. What about Stella? Bethan?

PieMistress · 20/03/2012 22:22

I have quite a few friends called Scott (but really like the name) and also a few babies in the area called Luke.

We added Bethany to our list recently :)

OP posts:
Stellan · 21/03/2012 10:46

I'm not sure about your boys' name - they seem a hodge-podge of styles (from the commonplace - Jay, Jake and Rory - to the unusual - Magnus, Pascal, and Eden) - and I find it hard to pick any one of them to pair up with Kyle!

A lot of them are nice names but I'm just not sure if any stand out to me as 'Kyle's brother'. If I had to pick one, it'd be Harris. Jay is too short and Joel too similar (even though it is a great name). Jago might be an option though!

I've had a think about names which are similar in popularity to Kyle and, thus, might work.

Kyle & Arlo
Kyle & Ashton
Kyle & Blake
Kyle & Brody
Kyle & Declan
Kyle & Dominic
Kyle & Eli
Kyle & Evan
Kyle & Ewan
Kyle & Heath
Kyle & Jago
Kyle & Jared
Kyle & Jesse
Kyle & Jonah or Jonas
Kyle & Otis
Kyle & Troy

Cerys is a nice name but I'd use Carys: Cerys and Kyle is a bit too matchy but Carys and Kyle sounds just right! I also like the Greek spelling, Charis, if you want the name to 'look' more distinct from Kyle on paper!

I also like:
Kyle & Seren
Kyle & Astrid
Kyle & Niamh
Kyle & Hope
Kyle & Megan

I'd avoid any name - for either a boy or girl - with a strong I sound. I'd cross off Naomi, Iris and Skye from your list of contenders.

PieMistress · 21/03/2012 11:11

Funnily enough with DS he was either going to be Kyle or Declan. Declan didn't sound like a child's name to me (just a man's name if that makes sense!) which is why we went for Kyle! I think we like either Harris, Jake, Josh or Jamie. I love Arlo and Otis from your suggestions but DP won't have any of it :(

How are you pronouncing Carys? I'm thinking Cerys rhymes with terrace and Carys is Car-is?

I love Seren but DP pulled a face :( so for girls I think we are down to Cerys/Carys, Megan, Cassie and Niamh

It's blinking difficult!

OP posts:
Stellan · 21/03/2012 11:18

Hard to explain but Carys is pronounced with the 'Ka' sound from Karen and the same ending as Cerys so a bit like KAH-ris. Cerys is as you said - a bit like KEH-ris.

AntsMarching · 21/03/2012 11:22

Another vote for Cerys - that is dd1's name.
