Giselle. i want it as a middle name if it's a girl as it's my grandmothers name. we have a family tradition that middle names be great grandmothers names if baby is a girl. the other option is patricia which i'm not keen on (sorry gran). but my boyfriend says that giselle sounds like a prostitute. or should i be more worried that he knows what names are likely in ladies of the night? [hmmm]

Giselle is fine, but Patrica is definitely a stripper.

oikopolis · 15/03/2012 00:00

Gisele is lovely.

A friend of mine's DH reacted thusly to the suggestion of Anna as a name for their DD:

Shock WHAT? Why would I name my daughter after ANNA NICOLE SMITH????

...men occasionally come up with extremely random sexual associations when it comes to names. i would take no notice

mynaughtylittlesister · 15/03/2012 00:17

I know a Gisele, she is lovely and definitely not a stripper! I like it! Smile

HardCheese · 15/03/2012 00:21

It's the name of a ballet, for heaven's sake! And very pretty - though the heroine of the ballet comes to a sticky end... I know a very cool, interesting teenage Giselle.

mycatsaysach · 15/03/2012 00:21

lovely name but it can't really be shortened can it?

suburbophobe · 15/03/2012 00:25

Depends of course on the type of company your husband keeps....

Giselle and Patricia are perfectly commonal garden names in Europe.

Elly (or Gizz) and Patty (or Trish/Tish) would be the shortened versions.

suburbophobe · 15/03/2012 00:27

For that matter, know a French Patricia who is called Patou - lovely!

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 15/03/2012 00:30

Jizz for short?

mimimomma · 15/03/2012 06:43

Definitely not. Makes me think of ballet- lovely.

ripsishere · 15/03/2012 06:52

But with a soft G is is Gizz (like gis a kiss). I know a Giz, she is German.

BelleEnd · 15/03/2012 06:54

I think your thread title and OP are offensive. Prostitutes are not a different breed ffs... Hmm

TheMerchantOfVenom · 15/03/2012 06:59

Have to say, I think the same thing as Belle...

TinkerMaloo · 15/03/2012 08:56

definitely not a hooker :)

Flowerface · 15/03/2012 09:05

Yes but, Merchant, I think they tend not to use their own names... So prostitute names are a different breed, as they are names specially chosen for a specific connotation.

PrincessPrecious · 15/03/2012 09:07

Reminds me of an elderly German woman. Not a prostitute.

CaoNiMa · 15/03/2012 09:10

Jizz...

fussbucket · 15/03/2012 09:11

Any woman working as a prostitute who happened to be called Brenda would probably change it, but more likely to Emanuelle than Giselle!

MrsHoarder · 15/03/2012 09:33

Definitely more of a pony club/ballet type name than prostitute to me.

lesley33 · 15/03/2012 09:38

Agreed that prostitutes are not a different breed - obviously. But there are certain names that prostitutes, strippers, lapdancers seem to change their names to to make themselves appear "sexier". So why would you deliberately choose a name for your DD that was one of those names?

Although Giselle is not one of those names. Now Jizz...Grin

qazxc · 15/03/2012 11:22

i would like to apologise if i have offended anyone. it wasn't my intention. but as i understand it sex workers adopt a professionnal name to make them seem sexier or more exotic. i was wondering if giselle was one of those names as i wouldn't want to give my daughter a name with those connotations. nothing against sex workers, whatever goes on between consenting adults is up to them imo.

That model, how do you pronounce her name? Because her surname is German I automatically read it as Ghee-za-la, rather than the French Jee-zelle. The German version flows better, as well as being more logical with the surname.
