I'm rather liking it. Siblings are Benedict, Rex and Artemis

:o at that link MardyBra! Apparently I'm prententious... Blush

RnB It's a shame that the name Atticus is so strongly linked with a famous book; especially as that isn't your reason for liking it!!

WetAugust · 15/03/2012 17:59

@ TheMerchantofVenom

You ceratinly lived up to your name in your attack on me.

Don't dare to presume you know what books I read.

And you accuse me of arrogance - breathtaking!

I accused you of ignorance. Wink

The dictionary is that way ---->

WetAugust - you came onto a thread and were indescribably rude. I was rude back you, but apparently it's OK for you but not for me?

I was also scathing at the content of your post re books set in certain cultures only being relevant to that culture. You make a daft comment, you can expect to be called on it.

Maybe this is a lesson in how to word your own posts in future. You're of course entitled to pay no heed to me in the slightest. But likewise, if you're as rude and as bolshy on future threads, don't be so bewildered when you're called on it. :)

WinkyWinkola · 15/03/2012 21:44

Hear hear Merch.

WetAugust · 15/03/2012 22:47

I was not rude. I gave my (note 'my') opinion of the name Atticus.

I did not say that books set in certain cultures are only relevant to that culture - that is a complete misinterpretation of what I wrote.

When I mentioned the 'Deep South' I meant that Atticus would probably be OK if you lived in an area where the name was widely used. I cannot imagine any area in the UK where the name is widely chosen.

I really don't understand why you are taking such exception.

This board is not confined to Yes / No, people are allowed to give their reasons. Another poster before my thread gave the same opinions on the name in relation to the book, yet you seem to have focused your ire on my post.

Well, carry on being the self-appointed moderator of this board. I shall carry on posting my opinions.

WetAugust · 15/03/2012 22:53

And before laying in to me you should consider whether your own opinions are accpetable in 'cultural terms' when you described the name Hudson in this way:

it conjures up a built-like-a-brick-outhouse, beer-swilling Southern redneck

In my book that is indescribably rude.

Nobody said it was incredibly popular.

Yes - according to Ancestry.com there are people named Atticus in Georgia than in the UK

It's TCAM not TKAM Smile

PineCones · 16/03/2012 08:54

Ignore previous message! Not had my morning coffee and apparently my brains are addled.

SoupDragon · 16/03/2012 08:55

How is it TCAM?

SoupDragon · 16/03/2012 08:55

Thank god - I thought I'd gone mad. :o

squoosh · 16/03/2012 11:17

I thought the main reason people looked for feedback on an internet forum is they know anonymous starngers will be completely honest in a way that most real life people won't be. (obviously there are many real life people who pride themselves on being obnoxious honest)

I think a lot of unnecessary offense has been taken on this thread. Where's the fun if everyone says 'that's nice dear', 'oh that's not so nice dear'. I don't think WetAugust was trying to be inflammatory or hurtful she was giving an honest opinion.

And ouch, she really called one of the other offended posters out when she found their description of the name Hudson as built-like-a-brick-outhouse, beer-swilling Southern redneck. An equally honest opinion I would say!

Lighten up peeps!

squoosh · 16/03/2012 11:18

Tsk, I meant strangers.

WinkyWinkola · 16/03/2012 13:49

I think it is the fact that some posters have been talking cobblers is the reason this discussion got a bit heated. Not because of a difference of opinion.

TheEpilator · 16/03/2012 14:15

I think it goes with your other names but a but similar to Artemis.

And I agree about the initials, as LadyMontdore said on p.1, two of our DCs have the same initials and, although handy for naming hand-me-down clothes, its pain when a letter arrives for Mstr E Pilator and you don't know which one of them has won on the Premium Bonds I'll just pocket the cash myself, its easier

TheEpilator · 16/03/2012 14:15

but a 'bit', obviously!

FilterCoffee · 16/03/2012 15:11

I thought we were supposed to be blunt and honest on baby name threads? It's not at all rude to give an honest personal opinion of how a name comes across to you, if someone has asked for opinions.

This is a place where we can ask for, and receive, honest opinions, which you won't get in real life. It's where you can hear what some people may really be thinking behind the "oh that's nice".

This is where you can find out that actually, that some names will remind most people of a cat, or that the name has been top of the charts for 10 years, or that most people like the name you're thinking of.

I think it's disingenous to insist that nothing is pretentious or poncy. There are names that do sound to many people as if the chooser is trying too hard, even if subconsciously, to be unique/fashionable/impressive/trendy/individual. So it's unreasonable to pretend that the "try-hard" thing doesn't mean anything. If people mention it on here, it's only because they are letting you know that some people will see it that way.

You can either take the opinions on board and think actually you don't want to use a name that so many people find harsh/ugly/pretentious/frilly/poncy/try-hard/over-popular/dull or you can decide you still like it and use the name anyway. But don't blame people for giving honest answers on these threads - you asked for the opinions and you can take them or leave them.

FilterCoffee · 16/03/2012 15:13

(And by "you" I mean anyone starting a baby names thread - not particularly the OP of this thread)

ExitPursuedByABear · 16/03/2012 15:16

Love it. And surely, Artemis is a girl so not likey to be any confusion.
