Ella as a sister for Ellie?

Somebody I know is expecting a DD. She already has a DD called Ellie but is adamant she is going to call DD2 Ella. Personally I am Shock, just wondering (in no big way) what other people think. At the end of the day she can do what she likes of course. Ella is an ok name, it's just its similarity to Ellie that would make me steer away from it if it were me.

God, no! I know a Milly and Molly. Thankfully they stopped at two, I shudder to think what the third would have been called.

I know a Robert who married a Roberta. Guess what they called their DS1?

Robert.

My DDs have completely different names but they are both two syllables and both end in the same sound, as a result I frequenly say the wrong name by mistake which is really unfair on them - we didn't think the names were that similar when we named them - many others get the names muddled too, even at school although they are a few years apart, so I'd avoid anything similar at all if you have the chance.
Sorry just read your OP - not you considering it - NYANBU Grin

Molly, Molly and Mandy of course. Eek.

BelleStar · 09/03/2012 20:36

Ellie and Ella aren't actually the same name though. One is Ellie and one is Ella! But they are much too similar for siblings I think. The main reason being that in my experience both names are often shortened to Els or El, so then you'd end up with the same name!

Hahaha!! plain daft!!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 09/03/2012 21:16

I taught twins Simon and Simone

And brother and sister Charlie and Carlie - neither were nicknames

Oh, and I went to school with twins Jay and Joy

bonkers

mad! I too knew of a Jane and Janet sisters, but when they grew up and went their separate ways it didn't really matter. I also heard of a Jasmine and a Tazmin sisters, and the mum wanted another to call Yasmin. So although I think its weird, clearly other people don't mind.

lolajane2009 · 09/03/2012 21:52

I knew a molly and a oliver, nn. olly.
sounds like someone with no imagination.

MarieFromStMoritz · 10/03/2012 02:51

I once knew an Emma & Gemma. It always bothered me.

kickassangel · 10/03/2012 03:09

i knew b/g twins called stephane & stephanie.

they got abbreviated to steph & stephie (I think) - was never sure which way round it was.

We have an Ella. Lovely name IMO Smile

But I often shorten it to El or Ellie when calling her.

We really liked Elin as a possibility for DD2, but decided it was too similar. Several people (MIL included) thought that was nice BECAUSE it was so similar.

We wanted our kids to be individuals. Within a family, but individuals. Not just different mini-versions of each other. Not that I don't ever buy matching tops for them, or the same winter jacket (they're small at the moment and don't have much say in such matters). But those are small things really, not like a name which you take through your whole life. It's cute when they're little, but we really hope that they'll be close to each other when they grow up too. Then it sounds a bit silly IMO.

Ella could always be a middle name for your friend's DD2. It is a lovely name Grin

EllenParsons · 10/03/2012 12:28

Shock Hmm Confused

I think it is way too close and sounds quite ridiculous, but I suppose some people aren't bothered. I have also known some siblings with basically the same name as each other

Natalie and Natasha (twins), Christoph and Christina...

ivykaty44 · 10/03/2012 12:32

Well I think its a great idea, but then I always get my two dd's names mixed up and wonder why I just didn't give them the same first name - it would have made life easier and I could have given them different middle names.

my great grandmother had an Elizabeth and an Eliza.

Clary · 10/03/2012 22:09

My mother has a friend with grandchildren (siblings) called Luke and Lucy. I think it's bizarre but my mum thinks it's fine and in fact can't see anything to comment on.

Maybe even she would be surprised at Ellie and Ella tho. Like Joey's sisters in Friends!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 11/03/2012 08:42

Ridiculous!

Although in my DH's culture identical twins are given similar names Confused SILs are Hasna and Hassania and I met twin boys called Hassan and Hussain!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 11/03/2012 08:42

I knew a family where mum and dad were Christine and Christopher and they named their son Christian...

thegreylady · 11/03/2012 12:08

Peter and Repeter perhaps :-)
